I don't know who chose the title and pic, but good for them! www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Something wonderful for the weekend! About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, an ancient artist skilfully sculpted this tiny head of a cave lion from mammoth ivory. It is one of the World’s oldest known works of figurative art. 📷 by me #Archaeology

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III. Sound familiar?

Climate.gov, a major US government website supporting public education on climate science, will likely shut down after almost all of its staff were fired. What would be worse is if the website were co-opted to publish climate denial content.

Most people, even in Hawaiʻi, don't realize that the nēnē would have gone extinct without Sir Peter Scott.

Speeding is for people who can't do math. The majority of car trips in the US are less than 6 miles. If you drive 30 mph instead of 20 mph, you'll only get there 6 minutes earlier but you're much more likely to kill someone. Just leave 10 minutes earlier and drive slower.

More than 5 million people in the UK are experiencing financial, health and housing insecurity at levels not seen since the 2008 economic crash. But it doesn't have to be this way. Austerity is a political choice. Labour could choose to tax wealth fairly instead. Now is the time.

Reform UK has uncovered the scandal of a “wasteful” £350m contract. Small problem: it’s not a contract. Or £350m. Or a scandal. Here’s how they got it completely wrong. 👇👇

While everyone is enthralled by the Trump / Musk bust up, this is happening in the background. Not even a hint of slowing down. We are the 'frog slowly being boiled alive'. Maybe media and politicians need to focus on what's important. And I've not even mentioned the genocide being ignored in Gaza.

NEW A little-noticed provision in the Senate budget bill would gut the government’s long-running CAFE fuel economy program for cars & light trucks. The provision sets all penalties for automakers who run afoul of the rules to zero — essentially repealing the law. heatmap.news/politics/cor...

Wellman: When I served in Iraq.. I heard about how Saddam Hussein divided them. Different sects fought each other. But you know -- Saddam and his family sat laughing at all of them. They divided them against each other and kept their power for 35 years. Does this sound familiar to anybody?

We sued the U.S. Air Force and USFWS for failing to release public records detailing the Trump administration’s plans to build landing pads for SpaceX rockets in sensitive marine habitat in the Pacific Ocean including Johnston Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. More info: biodiv.us/4dOFn4i

NEW: ICE has quietly rescinded a policy requiring agents to ensure courthouse raids don't clash with state and local laws. WIRED detected the missing language in a superseding memo posted to ICE's website this week. by me and @dmehro.bsky.social:

“I would like to cure brain cancer. I think that's not particularly controversial.” Be that as it may, the NIH terminated that scientist's grant. Here's a huge survey of the 2,500 grants that NIH has killed or delayed...so far. Gift link: nyti.ms/43Jz1yJ

Plastic pollution isn't just about litter. It's also fuelling the climate crisis and destroying wildlife. That's why we need a Global Plastics Treaty that sets legally binding limits on single-use plastics. It's about using less, not just recycling more. Big oil doesn't want this. We demand it.

UK MPs call for ban on bottom trawling in protected marine areas Story by @fionaharvey.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This is welcome and long overdue. MPs are now calling on the UK government to ban trawling and dredging in "Marine Protected Areas". It's outrageous that this wholescale destruction is permitted anywhere, let alone in these "reserves". It has to stop. committees.parliament.uk/publications...

This isn't surprising (to me) but it is actually quite strange, as the SPS agreement hasn't been reached and until it is the risks of not having full import controls continue. Plus, the statement reads as if a deal is guaranteed, but if it doesn't happen UK will be even further behind in preps.
