Work hard and do your best. That’s it. That’s all you can do. So much is outside your control with publishing. Having an agent you like and trust, and who sticks by you, is also key – but again that’s usually out of your control #ukteenchat

I’ve tried younger and also adult. I might have another go at adult sometime but right now I feel immersed in the YA space & it’s where I want to be. I’m interested in young people, their influences, worries and hopes. I also love how agile they are with language #ukteenchat 1/3

I always write in a linear way and I edit that way too, instead of by scenes. I’m easily confused! I’m much more ruthless when I edit though. I rewrote this book at a very late stage (because of worries around motivation). It was hugely stressful but worth it #ukteenchat

I like writing the intense moments – there’s love, friendship and hate in #WatchYourBack. I’ve discovered over the years I enjoy writing about sibling relationships. I like how Kara’s relationship with her little brother Dillon changes in this book #ukteenchat

The main research was police procedural. The school stuff was fairly easy as I worked in a school until quite recently. I don’t get a buzz out of research like some authors so I tend to write until I get to a point where I really need to do some! #ukteenchat
