When you discover a year-old potato in the back of the pantry cupboard:

1 editorial and 1 celebrity criticising her is by far the worst day, media-wise, JKR has had in decades. I'm sure she's taking it well.

is it this

ik a lot of ppl are loathed to give stephen fry any due but this, i think, is the first time a mainstream figure has been all over the british press straight-up saying jk rowling has been radicalised. this is actually unusual, and blanket, coverage.

Share with that family member that doesn't see the value in funding research. Then point out all of the ways they directly benefit from things that have developed from "silly" research. Encouraging human curiosity always pays off.

If someone had said, “Who cares how desert lizard venom works? Let’s not fund that research,” we never would have discovered semaglutide, a key component of drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic, which have helped millions of Americans lose weight.

I keep getting ads telling me to use AI to answer my emails for me, and everything I know about the theory of induced traffic tells me that this ends with an exponential increase in pointless emails as robots chat away to each other and minimal actual productivity gains

I bet they did

Shouldn’t the NY Times headline note that this new policy breaks the law?

Trump said he'd have an answer in two weeks because he has no idea what he's being asked about and frankly doesn't care. There, I just performed better analysis than the New York Times and I didn't even need to have my wallet inspected

abstinence only phone education! [looks up teen pregnancy and std rates in us bible belt states] oh no

british transphobes have repeatedly accused cisgender women of being trans just because they happen to be a) not white people and b) not bad at sports. e.g Imane Khelif is *not* transgender in any way according to all known facts and history about her. AND YET.

If you want a smile I suggest you read the comments too

It was when JK Rowling said that the Cass Review was a peer review itself and that's why it didn't need to be peer reviewed I realised she's an idiot. Anyway, here's a peer review of Cass. Guess what it finds?

The funny thing about this apnews.com/article/trum...

This “grapple more honestly with scientific uncertainty” line is straight out of the Tobacco Lobby/Climate Change denial playbook, applied to trans issues. Watch Merchants of Doubt.

conservatives: children are property of parents. children do not have autonomy. children do not have a choice if their parents wants them to do something. parents who don't suck ass: what if i want my child to do the thing that makes them happy? conservatives: no that's illegal

damn dude

Seeing this reminded me of a pattern I've noticed among passionate LLM/Gen AI advocates on here: A number of them are bad at talking to people, in a weird and specific way.

"Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels." arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872

I asked ICE where the “413% increase in assaults” justification for its officers using masks came from. They didn’t answer. So I dug into it, and what I found … did not boost their argument. Gift link: wapo.st/4l7a1ch

One of the funniest things I've seen I must say

tradwife, in the sense that she chases me around with a rolling pin

This framing exists because the decision is instantly obvious as one of the legal atrocities of US history, like Dred Scot, the 1870s Civil Rights Cases, Korematsu. The Times doesn’t want to say “The Supreme Court stripped rights out of law” so instead it says “Here’s why they did it to themselves”

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

These two things are the same thing: the project always has been unlimited freedom for themselves and policemen clubbing you in the teeth, if you object to it. Because they are real people with meaningful lives and irrevocable freedoms, and you are a rabble of pigs who must be ruthlessly policed.

It's easy to forget now but we had decades of steady advancement on trans rights. The 2016 bathroom bills invited huge backlash! It was only after the media constructed sports and youth medications as 'debates' that opposition moved from the far right to the polite center.

Amazing correction in the Telegraph.

“Trump spent years campaigning against risky and expensive wars, and criticizing hawkish foreign policy decisions” is just straightforwardly false. It’s completely made up!

Wrote this piece for Harpers Bazaar about the life, legacy, and hate-induced murder of Jonathan Joss through the eyes of being a Two-Spirit Native person this Pride. I hope you take a read. For Him. For all of us. 🪶

The problem with this ‘let’s weaken our commitment to the ECHR so as to fend off Farage’ plan is that when it doesn’t work, we end up with Farage *and* a weakened commitment to the ECHR at exactly the moment we need the ECHR the most.

BBC reporting Israeli military just killed 51 Palestinians as they waited for flour at an Israeli run Gaza aid site. So to recap, Israel: -Blocks aid to Gaza -Blocks UNRWA from getting aid into Gaza -Insists on setting up its own aid sites -Murders starving Palestinians seeking aid This Is Genocide

It's fine. Nothing bad has ever happened at the hand of a neolib PM simpering in obeisance to a war-hungry Republican president looking for a popularity boost at home

My partner & I were trying to ID a bird we heard while walking and the guy who had stopped his car to let us pass got out and was like "it's a frog, actually. Cope's Gray. I do frog surveys... Sorry" And then got in his car without a word and drove off. Absolute king

I told you guys

A major danger of LLMs is that humans are SO predisposed to attribute knowledge to any entity that uses natural language fluently. We cannot imagine that a machine that outputs natural-seeming speech/text doesn't have cognition. Brilliantly articulated by @emilymbender.bsky.social et al. (2021).
