Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government. That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

@suecowley.bsky.social following up your post yesterday. www.ibtimes.com/chatgpt-othe...

This thread is a shocking catalogue of appalling racism aimed at @sundersays.bsky.social and the completely inadequate response from X and to be frank the police as well. I hope the police eventually step up properly because this is awful.

1. A story. Please read. Reposts hugely appreciated on this. You'll see why in a bit. I was born in Pakistan and lived there until I was 4. My parents worked there as doctors. While we were there we were very close to a couple called Christine and Mike Miles.

Facebook banned @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social for this essay, "Some Notes on the City of Angels and the Nature of Violence." So, make sure to read it and share it! "The Trump Administration is a huge surge of almost every kind of violence." www.meditationsinanemergency.com/some-notes-o...

Don't believe it could happen here? Think, attacks on the judiciary, assaults on journalists, illegal foreign influence on our democracies, attacks on fundamental rights and the ECHR, othering of people of colour, denial of rights to those fleeing oppression, militarisation of policing...

As Trump deploys the National Guard against his own citizens, the importance of protecting our own human rights from abuse at the hands of govt has never been clearer. But *still* the Tories push to strip us of our protections, in a desperate bid for power for themselves. Important letter (Times)

The apparent popularity of Reform’s racist, Islamophobic agenda is deeply concerning (unless you are racist & Islamophobic). But there are reasons for hope that an ethno-nationalist historical discourse at least is being widely rejected.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s Roland Garros final becomes the 2nd longest Grand Slam final in the Open Era. 1. Djokovic & Nadal 2012 Australian Open, 5 hours, 53 minutes. 2. Alcaraz & Sinner 2025 Roland Garros, 5 hours, 29 minutes. It was an honor to witness it.

It is frankly disgusting. Imagine believing you can add 52 state schools to your estate to bequeath to your kids when you die. And it’s not a done deal that he won’t get away with it - the new bill stopped short of that.

Calling #Glasgow friends. Looking for a cheapish but cheerful and comfortable accommodation somewhere in the west end on the weekend of 20th June. Anyone got any good leads?

A party with 5 parliamentary seats, an absentee leader and a dodgy governance gets coverage: the party with 72 seats and an established set-up gets virtually none. Go figure.

As ever @michaelrosenyes.bsky.social able to get straight to the heart of the matter.
