Here I react to the shameful encounter between American leaders and media and the Ukrainian president. No doubt there were more, but I saw five failures on our side: of hospitality, decency, democracy, strategy, and independence. Please watch and share. snyder.substack.com/p/five-failu...

Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.

One way to commemorate the end of the third year of Russia’s senseless, criminal war against Ukraine is to read the work of Ukrainians about it. Vika did not live to see the publication of this book, since she was killed by a Russian missile. But we can see her in her words.

Stephen Fry: “I’m deeply worried by the darkening shadow that’s going over the world, a shadow that we have to call fascism” Laura Kuenssberg: “You would use that word?” Stephen Fry: “Oh absolutely. It’s a cult of power; and power only speaks to power” #bbclaurak

If you ask me, this would have been a much better choice for Time’s Person of the Year.

This month in 1845, Taras Shevchenko was near death from fever when he wrote a poem that has come to be known as the "Testament". In translation its rhythm evokes the hymn "Amazing Grace": When I am dead, o dig a grave For me in my Ukraine Atop a mound of forebears brave, The steppe my last domain

Fact. Dunning-Kruger effect.

Sonora Jha draws readers into her narrator's misguided (read: bigoted) paranoia in her award-winning novel "The Laughter." KUOW Book Club readers won't want to miss this month's pick or my discussion here 👇

Until abortion is legal in every state, lets require men to get a mandatory vasectomy until they are proven emotionally mature, financially responsible and ready to be a father. Wait, what do you mean regulations on men's bodies make you uncomfortable?

What is preventing World War III? Ukrainians are containing the ongoing war in Europe to their own country; they are deterring war in the Pacific; and they are preventing spread of nuclear weapons. These scenarios have not played out because Ukrainians take risks snyder.substack.com/p/a-third-wo...

Makes me sad re-reading this amazing letter from ex-Watergate Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox sent to high school seniors in 1994 after they asked him “What should Americans learn from Watergate?” 20 years later in ‘94. His answer is remarkable—unfortunately things didn’t work out so well in 2024.

Using a particle accelerator to generate 3D CT-scans of carbonized scrolls from Pompeii that can't be unrolled, and then applying machine learning to read words. Truly amazing story. Probably some unknown texts will be revealed!
