I will be looking to hire 2-3 post-docs over the course of the next few months to work on questions related to cognitive control in humans, using EEG, TMS, DBS, sEEG, fMRI, or related methods. If you know anybody, please tell them to email me. Formal ad to follow. Lab website: wessellab.org

I've started to create a Google doc to compile & share cog psych teaching resources, organized by topics (e.g., attention, memory, language) & resource types. This week, I ask you to share any in-class demos you'd like to give. Please reply to this post or tag me in a separate post. Thanks!

To make it easier to share teaching resources, I'd like to start by asking what your favorite cog psych videos are. Let me start: I love showing this visual agnosia video in class. Kevin is articulate about his recognition problems. What's your favorite? I'll compile your responses & share them.

New modeling paper, spearheaded by Raphael Geddert and Seth Madlon-Kay, now out in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review: "Modeling of control over task switching and cross-task interference supports a two-dimensional model of cognitive stability and flexibility". Free read link: rdcu.be/epatc

In this article, @jetrach.bsky.social and McDougle show that motor responses can form part of structured, graph-like memory representations. @actlab.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

In this article, @yuedu.bsky.social and @adrianhaith.bsky.social show that behavior can become habitual in two different ways, involving response initiation and response preparation, respectively www.nature.com/articles/s41...

So your research area has been politicized and your federal funding cancelled, what now? I try to give some answers in this opinion piece for @nature.com 1/ www.nature.com/articles/d41...

These are important points. Univ. of Michigan is the 3rd largest employer in Michigan. Due to stable jobs and good benefits, people with all educ. backgrounds have jobs. So do places UM buys from.

New paper! @rewaniw.bsky.social, Clay Curtis, and I show that the way visual representations are routed through cortex when seeing vs. remembering affects their precision. We link this to behavior & show how task demand matters (👀 cool animation in 🧵) #neuroscience #visionscience #PhDSky 1/15

Join us tomorrow for our very first OPAM online workshop! In it @rebeccahirst.bsky.social will show us how Psychopy can be a useful tool for designing experiments both in person (with eyetracking!!) and online. The workshop will be completely free and a video will be posted online afterwards!

Academic friends, if your NSF grants have been terminated by the administration, FABBS is hosting a webinar Friday about appealing the decisions. It's important that as many people appeal as possible to show we're not accepting this targeting of science. Link to the webinar registration is below.

New preprint + toolbox! BrainTRACE is a MATLAB tool for localizing intraOp ECoG electrodes. It was designed for brain tumor patients, but appropriate for all ECoG implants. github.com/dbrang/Brain... www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

Vim is the original escape room

We've reached the time of year where I receive various iterations of the following email: "I almost got the grade that I wanted, but I didn't quite get there. Can you go ahead and just change it for me? OK thx, bye!"

We hope to see you at #BINSeminarSeries today at 9AM PT|12PM ET! 🧠 It's not too late to register. Just click the link below! 🔗: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

On the cover! Let's go @brissend.bsky.social! Errors of attention adaptively warp spatial cognition www.nature.com/articles/s41...

this Aaron Gordon ball in hand, ball in basket at the buzzer is breaking my brain I have never thought about this scenario until right now

Thanks to all of you for sharing your writing advice, my students (and maybe yours) can benefit from the wisdom in this thread!

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM Implementation of Schedule F This is what a lot of us have been worried about. This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs. BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD... 1/n

The Spark Society appreciates your support. Thank you all for your donations. In addition to donations, I encourage those who study animal or human cognition to become a member of the Spark Society. If you support diverse voices and building inclusive spaces in Cognitive Psy/Sci, you belong!

That last point I've been on a soapbox about for a long time. Just because it's peer-reviewed doesn't mean you should *believe* it now. Most published papers (including my own) have flaws, shortcomings, outright errors, etc. Show me a few replications first and the needle moves a bit

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

It’s here! It’s here! Our Black In Neuro Annual Report for FY23-24 (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024) 🎉 We would like to thank our BIN team, Daniela Franco for preparing this report, and Ni-ka Ford for the beautiful cover art 😍 static1.squarespace.com/static/5f022... 🧵 1/8

Good morning #CNS2025! Come by our poster this morning. Awesome work by @brissend.bsky.social B30 Causal role of the cerebellum in spatial working memory (TMS-fMRI)

Starting later this afternoon!

Are you at CNS: hot* symposia alert featuring myself, @aaronbornstein.bsky.social, @chelseahelion.bsky.social, and @iancballard.bsky.social talking about uncertainty resolution across learning, memory, social cognition, and decision-making. See you Monday at 10:00 AM. *I sweat a lot giving talks

Hey everybody! #CNS2025 bleepstorm incoming! 9 POSTERS! I work with an amazing group of scientists, celebrating them this weekend in Boston is makes me so excited and hopeful (and I usually abhor the use exclamation points!) (All posters available on the lab website): mnemology.org/conferences/...

At #CNS2025? Come by our posters from the Cognition, Control, and Action Lab! SAT 3-5pm A126 Modeling the temporal dynamics of cognitive control A149 Cognition-Action links in Parkinson disease (TMS-fMRI) SUN 8-10am B30 Causal role of the cerebellum in spatial working memory (TMS-fMRI)

Thanks to everyone's feedback, we have updated our calculator to optimize sample size N & scan time T for fMRI studies: leonoqr.github.io/ORSP_Calcula... The first new feature is that users can explore how different N & T leads to different accuracy, e.g., N=1000 & T=30min => 81% max accuracy. 🧵

If you have a federal grant, I *highly* recommend going to this Friday's webinar on responding to grant terminations. Lisa Brown, former general counsel at Dept of Ed, will present along with other lawyers. Friday, March 21, 2-3 pm. More info & register here: www.linkedin.com/pulse/regist...
