I’ve begun my journey to reduce my reliance on US tech, so it’s time for an update on how it’s all going! No surprise, some services are far more easy to replace than others. Email and streaming are low-hanging fruit; maps and messaging can be more difficult. But we should still make the effort.

"getting rid of demoracy so they don't have be hold accountable" @parismarx.com they are fascists

Feels fitting to do an episode on Brazil in the week I’m actually in the country. So great to speak with @laismartins.com to learn more about Brazil’s efforts to rein in major US tech companies!

Recommend this episode for a big picture on how what we all AI didn’t have to evolve as it did (and could be reconfigured into safer, smaller, closed applications for specific projects) Like trump & musk, Altman is a talented con man, and we’re unfortunately living inside his long AI con right now

Great to see @techpolicypress.bsky.social fellow @laismartins.com join @parismarx.com to discuss Brazil- more to come from Laís today.

Brazil stepped up enforcement against major tech companies, but Elon Musk and Rumble have been fighting back. This week @laismartins.com joins @parismarx.com to discuss Brazil’s efforts to assert its sovereignty online and push back on US tech companies. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/281_...

🎤♻️ At our event “Sustainable AI: Narratives and Impacts” @paulschuetze.bsky.social‬ (Uni Osnabrueck) and @parismarx.com‬ (@techwontsave.us‬) discussed if and how #AI can be a leap forward in the sustainability project or if it is reproducing the status quo. 📺 Full recording: buff.ly/XJKPPHe

OAI is perhaps the oddest development in tech of the last 20 years. Just a truly bizarre agglomeration of freaks. All the worst aspects of tech gathered together.

AI as (colonial) empire

I can’t recommend @karenhao.bsky.social’s Empire of AI enough. She doesn’t shy away from telling the true story of OpenAI and all the harm that’s come from its pursuit of generative AI expansion. It was a pleasure to dig into it with her on the podcast!

Very much worth listening to

"A lot of people who believe that AGI is around the corner... it's not based on their belief of what software can do. It is inherently based on their belief of what humans [are] and our intelligence is" - Karen Hao

Elon Musk gutted the federal government, dismantled key institutions, and cut off food and medicine to some of the poorest people on the planet. By leaving DOGE, he’s trying to restore his reputation and rescue his struggling businesses. He should never be allowed to recover.

To dominate AI, Sam Altman knew OpenAI needed to scale faster than anyone else — regardless of the social and environmental costs. This week @karenhao.bsky.social joins @parismarx.com to discuss Altman’s AI empire and why it must be dismantled. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/280_...

A couple of years ago the @techwontsave.us podcast did a 4-part series on Elon Musk and it should be required listening for everyone - an absolutely surgical dismemberment. Here's the first episode - listen to the entire series on your preferred podcast app. techwontsave.us/episode/189_...

Check out this episode and how Facebook/Meta, Google/Alphabet, SpaceX etc are seeing the military complex as their new revenue stream.

Palantir is leading the charge to remake military contracting so newer tech companies get far more lucrative arms contracts. This week @sambiddle.com joins @parismarx.com to discuss the tech industry’s effort to become the new military industrial complex. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/279_...

listening to @sambiddle.com talk here about silicon valley's pivot* to military and can't help but think when that happens, the players have probably accurately judged that the state is the last entity left that has any money (* i mean, the military is literally how they got started)

The prospective 'Enshitification of the US Military' will make for an interesting history for the researchers of the far future.

I’ve been meaning to have @sambiddle.com on the show for ages! We dig into how the tech industry is pivoting to try to get way more lucrative military contracts and openly embracing the goal of US supremacy in the process.

Great article. I also recommend @techwontsave.us podcast on the same subject techwontsave.us/episode/275_...

Just now listening to this great podcast- Data Vampires (Also A+ on the name!) I will pair this with @lizafeatherstone.bsky.social's piece on AI in fall semester.

This was my commute listen yesterday, I loved @caseyjohnston.bsky.social ‘s observation that tech media and hype often goes against what customers experience. And it is valuable to have people who advocate for consumer voice. I loved the digital detox discussion too. 5 stars

Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale recently accused Balaji Srinivasan of “insane CCP thinking” for not getting behind the project of fusing Silicon Valley to the Pentagon. It exposed a disagreement on how to best expand the power of the tech elite, but not on tech’s deeper right-wing turn.

Podcast recommendation: @techwontsave.us, hosted by @parismarx.com. Been on the 'skeptical of the techbros' beat for years now, well before most, and every episode is a fascinating discussion on various aspects of tech. Support the podcast on Patreon if you enjoy! techwontsave.us/episodes

I was That Guy who thought quitting social media was unnecessary, that I needed to be on it. And then it was like, when you’ve been putting up with a leaky faucet or shitty door latch and you think it’s basically fine, and then get it fixed and realize how much and how often it was annoying you

I was intrigued when @caseyjohnston.bsky.social’s article about her DIY Dumbphone method came across my feed, but our conversation goes so much deeper than that. Check it out, then grab a copy of her new book!

Social media profits from making us feel bad, but what does it take to really take a step back? This week @caseyjohnston.bsky.social joins @parismarx.com to discuss dumbing down her smartphone and her new book “A Physical Education.” Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/278_...

Another Starship has exploded. A couple weeks ago I talked to @timfernholz.bsky.social about why the entire project may be in trouble, among many other things.

SpaceX blew up another Starship rocket. It’s worth listening to this podcast episode, if only for the section about the failures of the Starship program. Tl;dr, these failures are more frequent and more concerning than typical new rocket failures.

Tenho pensado bastante nisso

Mind blowing points!

A must listen for everyone in higher ed!! SO so good

This episode resonated. I've been struck there has been no collective pushback against AI in HE. Universities normalize AI in research while asking lecturers to police students. Linking students' AI use to scarce resources is spot on IMO & I liked how they deconstructed the inevitability myth

Really enjoyed having this conversation. Thank you @parismarx.com ! w/ @alexhanna.bsky.social

Great ep of @techwontsave.us with @parismarx.com interviewing @emilymbender.bsky.social and @alexhanna.bsky.social and their new book The AI Con open.spotify.com/episode/02nc... Great deconstruction of the hype around AI which hides its harms.

I’m listening to this now and it’s super informative. I hadn’t thought about the connection between boosters (“AI is all powerful and will save the world”) and doomers (“AI is all powerful and will destroy the world.”) They both promote that first idea, which is amazingly speculative.

This is an engaging and informative conversation that offers a good variety of ways to see through the oceans of hype tech companies are drowning us in.

I would also recommend Data Vampires series from @techwontsave.us which is about data centers and their impact. techwontsave.us/data-vampires

OH YES!!!!

Listened to this on my mental health walk today, highly recommend.
