There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd. It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

Charles Barkley: “They got us up so high I could touch God. That’s the only chance il get too see him. I’m going to hell”

Trump is in the process of destroying our justice system, Harvard, CBS News, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the careers of countless scientists, and many other things that make America great. If we don't stop him, he’ll eventually get around to you.

Born on this day 100 years ago, one of the great musical artists of the 20th century: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. I gift you this remarkable remembrance, written by his student, baritone Benjamin Appl. If you have a few minutes to read this, you will be happy you did. #musicsky #classicalmusic

I'd seen a million links to this great @dansinker.com piece over the last few days and finally had a chance to read it. Really resonates, especially as I'm trying to create and share more dansinker.com/posts/2025-0...

the U.S. press position is that user LeninGood1921 stands for the Democratic Party, but the words and actions of the Republican President cannot be taken as representing the Republican Party.

“They taught us at Barnard about that word”

The cool thing about being president is that any time you want money, you can threaten tariffs, buy cheap stocks, then reverse the tariffs and collect your profit when stocks rebound.

"This is what we were voting for!" From a friend in academia: >>I was with a public health professor from [major university] last weekend and he said that NIH is now euthanizing whole cohorts of animals from animal studies because there is nobody around to feed them<< Great work.

puking in a del taco bathroom all by yourself, handsome?

Medicaid is the only support for long term care for the elderly for the middle class. Without Medicaid to take over when seniors have spent their savings, there is nothing but sickness and homelessness

There was an old tweet that stuck with me: "If you can easily walk to the coffee shop but your barista has a one hour commute, you don't live in a walkable 15 minute city; you live in a theme park"

Here it is, your #BlueSky #Bike Content of the Day for Wednesday, 5/7/25. Every, single, flexi-post is a conscious decision that car paint is more precious than human lives -

When asked if the United States should have a military parade to show off its might, President Eisenhower responded: “Absolutely not. We are the pre-eminent power on Earth. For us to try and imitate what the Soviets are doing in Red Square would make us look weak.”

We need to do much better for our local journalism than simply relying on police reports for our 'news stories'.

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

😍😍😍 waking up and reading about what thing I like is being destroyed or dismantled for parts every single day 😍😍😍

My blood pressure cannot handle this

The destruction of the US scientific infrastructure is outrageous and stupid and criminally underreported. People who don’t interact with scientists aren’t being told what’s happening. The great building of American prosperity is being destroyed at the foundations, and it may already be too late

National suicide. USA to the Khmer Rouge: Hold my beer

Not a word of this is true. Literally not a word.

April 28, 2025: Migrants are making SOS signs out of their bodies so drones can see them at our country's concentration camps.

Chilling.

Andry José Hernández Romero, I remember you, even if I do not know how to articulate my horror, rage, & sorrow at your treatment by my government. No one has heard from you in 43 days. As vigil, I’m posting a photo of you every day until you are returned from El Salvador.

Great analogy. Frankly, mainstream media — including the NYT and NPR — are doing a terrible job explaining what is happening right now with our trade and scientific infrastructure. People are going to be furious.

Lovely and inspiring end to an…insurance case

A scientist is revolutionizing cancer detection. The sane thing to do would be give her whatever money she wants and maybe a medal. The dumbass thing to do would be to cut her funding. What we're doing is throwing her in jail. Until we deport her to Russia to be almost certainly murdered

Philosopher Eva Meijer adopted lab mice, not to experiment on, but to get to know them and their perspective on life. "The mice showed me how life and death are always entwined, and how thin the thread is that separates them." 🧪

we all have an emotional support dead famous guy and who he is says a lot about you

‘Artists in Exile.’ 1942. Front Row: Stanley William Hayter, Leonara Carrington, Frederick Kiesler, Kurt Seligmann. Second Row: Max Ernst, Amedee Ozenfant, Andre Breton, Fernand Leger, Berenice Abbott. Third Row: Jimmy Ernst, Peggy Guggenheim, John Ferren, Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian

The wholesale destruction of American scientific infrastructure is being woefully underreported

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

The student paper at the college at which I teach reports a "tsunami of takedown requests" from international students terrified of being targeted for innocuous, legitimate op-eds & opinions.. Many ask in person--leave no trace in writing. Reminds me of my father's account of studying in the USSR.

Dear MC from twenty years ago — yes, we are now marching arm in arm with Bill Kristol, and yes, you will understand

every third post these days is just “this is so fucking terrible” with a link to some news story and they’re all 100% correct

Like hearing bolts crack in a submarine
