Huh it's more path than garden.

I love that these people keep talking about how manly and hypermasculine these two "alphas" are, and all they're actually doing is whining and complaining about one another, often in completely different forums. My high school students usually weren't this fucking puerile.

I think a lot of people don't understand that in a world where everyone uses "AI" to vomit out statistically average text, the ability to use words uniquely becomes a premium skill and a critical differentiator.

Hey Melbourne! I'll be there in a few weeks to do a book talk!! www.readings.com.au/events/emily... July 1, 6pm, at RMIT, with Dr. Kobi Leins as interlocutor.

Heartbreaking www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06...

:-(

Welp guess I'll have to work out how to get Apple TV now. (Netflix keeps sending us gambling ads despite our opposition to gambling corporations, so I guess once we've finished the current seasons of Black Mirror and Love Death & Robots, it might just about be goodbye for us.)

Well Flight of the Nova is a fun space-landing simulator in desperate need of a trim control.

However do you pick two?! However, the two most recent authors I've read were Aliette de Bodard and RSA Garcia (both today, still catching up on my 2024 short fiction list!) so I guess they're who I'll mention.

So many more than two! But for tonight, @annleckie.com and @marthawells.com because they're so insightful in their depictions of artificial intelligences (that are actually intelligent!).

In praise of niche papers www.superlinguo.com/post/7845555... A blog post inspired by @dingemansemark.bsky.social I really enjoyed this exercise, please share those papers which are close to your heart and you're always surprised they don't get much attention!

This is a really fun interview with Alexander SkarsgĂĄrd about Murderbot. Fun insights into his interpretation of the character. Mad props to him for being 100% consistent about Murderbot's "it" pronouns, and you can watch the interviewer picking it up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGxK...

have had to tell a few people that non-binary people can be masc-presenting. that this kind of gatekeeping disqualifies a lot of amab bodies. this kind of discussion puts qualifiers on who gets to be non-binary and it's gross.

When the Cass Review came out last year, the NYT rushed to cover it complete with post notifications. After reviews in Germany and Utah came out supporting gender affirming care for trans youth, dead silence. You can be just as biased in what you don't cover as what you do.

Huh, fuck. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...

Pretending to be a PUA and telling men on social media to shave off their eyelashes to be attractive to women would be the sort of shit I'd have pulled when I was 20 and immature.

Since for some reason I've suddenly gone on a gestural studies binge

Six months from now the Nats are going to lean into Family Court Dad Energy so hard

Now would be a great time for Jacinta Nampijinpa Price to do the funniest thing and defect back to the Nats

Nowa Fantastyka (oldest Polish SFF magazine) Award 2025 winners: Foreign Book of the Year: And Say My Glory Was I Had Such Friends, collection of letters between Stanisław Lem and Ursula K. Le Guin (published only in Poland so far but classified as foreign book because the letters were in English)

It's hard to overstate the impact this is having on many people I know. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05...

From the creators of "I don't like Rage against the Machine anymore, they've gone woke", we bring you a new, thrilling journey of self discovery:

TOP AI IN EDUCATION FAILS ... so far:

this just started and i'm already losing my mind and screaming Western white folk basically putting an AI avatar on stage and pretending it is a refugee from sudan — literally interacting with it as if it is a “woman that fled to chad from sudan” just fucking shoot me

If humanity survives the next few hundred years and retains any sort of cultural memory of these times, I really hope we look back at this era with disgust and shame.

I will also note the various authors had proposed a future where information couldn't be trusted because so much automatically generated information existed online - in one case as a deliberate tactic by geopolitical powers.

Douglas Adams

The whole 'Grok is a boer now' thing is very funny, but it also really exposes how every 'AI tool' isn't just passively biased from training data, but actively designed to shape your worldview according to the interests of the billionaires who made them.

See a whole bunch of people who seem to be conflating "education" with "assessment" (an important part of education, but far from the whole).

Please don't put in the newspaper that 28 children laughed at me
