NIMBYism is an absolutely insane brain disease. You'd think this opinion letter was talking about some suburban single family neighborhood, not a chunk of Manhattan already covered in skyscrapers. Here is the "human scale" neighbourhood for context where a tallish hospital is clearly out of place.

He has no idea how any of this works and thinks that tariffs are magic. That's the point. More broadly, he thinks that the only thing wrong with the global economy was that America was not being exploitative enough, and we could magically make everyone pay tribute if we ordered them to. We can't.
