This is incredibly beautiful storytelling.

Some people get into journalism because they’re skeptical of power, and others do so because they’re impressed by it. Moments like this are clarifying with respect to who’s who.

I spent the last week reading and writing while looking at this, so that I could take a breather from the news/life and get myself grounded more in thoughtfulness than reflexive rage. It worked all of a few hours upon my return.

It's been years since I've read for pure escapism - without taking notes or thinking about narrative structure. I got lost in a book this week. Thanks @kellybarnhill.bsky.social for When Women Were Dragons. I laughed, I cried. Just a true gem of a novel. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/695825...

Companies are just AI-drunk these days. It won't make Wikipedia "more accessible". It's already accessible and straightforward. Who wants more machine vomit to muddy the waters? www.404media.co/wikipedia-pa...

I want to caution everyone in moments of overwhelm at all of the overlapping harms to pace yourself and be intentional in your efforts. You can’t hold all of this. And you don’t have to. Find the thing you do well. Find people and work that sustains you. Trust that others are doing the same.

Contact @governorwalz.mn.gov. This is disgusting. This state benefits from poor workers. That we should actively do something that allows the poorest among us to suffer and die is now "Minnesota Nice" apparently.

Sec Def threatening to deploy the military against American civilians has us checking to make sure we are still living in the United States. To our troops risking their lives to protect us and our republic - we support you. Do not accept illegal orders. Call the GI rights hotline 1-877-447-4487.

When you gotta scritch, you gotta scritch...

Every time I need a prompt to write, all I have to do is read one of those AITAH Reddit posts. People really let others determine what kind of person they are going to be ("they did this to me, so I'm going to do something equally awful"). Moral code switching. #writingprompt #writingcommunity

Federal law enforcement officials including ICE raided Las Cuatro Milpas, a taco restaurant in Minneapolis, on Tuesday as immigrant rights activists and neighbors protested. minnesotareformer.com/2025/06/03/h...

Bunny be snacking.

Punditry has devolved into this bizarre, interpretive dance easily dismissed if one reads/watches/hears the source material. Good opinion writers contextualize and explore ideas. Bad ones twist meaning to suit their predetermined opinion and biases, logic or meaning be damned.

it is my belief that when people spend years and decades of their lives poring over a subject I find really boring, like the law or regulations or medical research, I should just listen to them and spend my time on things I actually like doing and am capable of comprehending by myself

Birding isn’t a competition. It’s a celebration. It’s not about the photo. Not about the list. It’s about the joy of being present with every bird you’re lucky enough to see. Give yourself some grace out there—and if you miss a bird, just smile and say, “I’ll see it someday.” Happy birding, y’all. 🫶

I just followed someone with "kind of an asshole" in their profile and blocked someone who repeatedly, in a myriad of ways, replies to people with "have you no decency?". I definitely have a type.

Reading @jessicacalarco.bsky.social's Holding It Together. It confirms my lived experiences and the experiences of a lot of the women around me, many of whom are burnt out on caregiving with no viable relief. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/697130...

It's that time of year. Baby bunnies everywhere. Being outside and offline has been useful for my mental health. These little guys surely help!

More than 6,000 Minnesotans newly eligible to vote cast their ballots last year after lawmakers expanded voting rights to residents on felony parole and probation.

Maybe I've got the object impermance thinking of a dog, but I don't care about politicians who no longer serve the country. I'm not distracted by the last thing. I'm concerned about the thing right in front of my face. The grotesque squeaky toy destroying the country AT THIS MOMENT.

YES! Material support makes a difference in a majority of outcomes. It's not complicated. I'm an absolute convert to the idea of UBI in this case and in all cases. Cheaper in the long run than any obstacle-ridden, jump-through-hoops billionaire nonsense to turn us all into factory robots.

Women feel pain when you mess with their innards. These people are geniuses! If it were the 15th century. Knock me the fuck out if you're coming at me with salad tongs, needles, or anything that scrapes. www.npr.org/sections/sho...

Took a break from all things serious and have been bingewatching The Residence. Love, love, love Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cupp - a birder!

So what? The literary world is always in the first detonation blast zone. Run towards the searing light. You don't want to live in the world without the arts. Become a writer.

All of today's activities have been cancelled. New book order has arrived. A burst of yellow, like sunshine and bumblebees. Thanks to @rosemarymosco.com's The Birding Dictionary and @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social's No Straight Road Takes You There. I might have to set up a hammock.

Why are so many creepy old white men talking about girls and their dolls? Seriously, have they met a child they didn't have some weird fetishized ideas about? So creepy. Every time one of this administration's dipshits opens their mouth, I feel the need to kink-shame.

Some big corps are affirming their Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion programs, because it is a BUSINESS decision. DEI is good for business, good for government, good for communities, and good for humanity. What's not good? Mediocrity, greed, racism, misogyny, trad-fucking-anything.

Humans once again ruining this Sunday morning with mowers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws. Finally gave up gardening. Will need to write a horror story replete with demonic lawn equipment and a comeuppance involving plant life in revolt. The dandelions will say "not today asshole, not today".

In times of uncertainty, there's only one thing we can ever be certain about as writers... thegreenstudy.com/2025/05/04/a... #writingcommunity
