Psion hardware/software hackery, especially SIBO/EPOC16 (Series 3, etc). Made #PsiDrive, a USB Psion SSD drive. Slowly rewriting the SIBO C SDK. ⚠️ WARNING: Will sidequest ⚠️ 🦣 https://oldbytes.space/@thelastpsion 🦑 https://github.com/thelastpsion

What's the best #ZXSpectrum SD card interface right now? I've seen plenty of mentions of the DivMMC and its derivatives (EnJOY, Future). I've also seen the Retroleum SMART Card. But I can't find any comparisons. I'd love to know about people's experiences. #Sinclair #retrocomputing

FYI fediverse users, I just migrated to chaos.social/@polpo - I mostly cross post everything between Bluesky and Mastodon so there's not much difference in where you follow me but I thought I'd mention it here anyway!

I love my Acorn retro computer collection! Have a real soft spot for that green logo... - Acorn Pocket Book - Acorn Archimedes A3010 - Acorn Electron

I am a DT teacher in a school. My colleagues and I sometimes play School Wars. We imagine that each dept. has to fight each other. We have plenty of tools and we could easily take out History and RS. Science is tricky as they could use chemicals. P.E scare the crap out of us.

Welcome to the world of... the Psion! youtu.be/L3DqruohP3I

Hello new followers! I’m Adrian, curator of crusty curiosities at Binary Dinosaurs. You may know me from such bangers as ‘that smells like a RIFA, where did they manage to hide that?!’ and ‘great, beneath everything needing a complete cabinet stripdown 😬’ Yes, CPT, I’m looking at you.

Working on the mechtrum plus and tweaked the layout for a full size spectrum board and messing with some support for the keyboard.

This is a Sinclair ZX Spectrum prototype. It was found in 2019 during a visit to 'Nine Tiles', the company that wrote the development software for the Spectrum. It is now on display at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge. Such an important part of British computing history.

So, clarifying the WH Smith situation (at least in my head): - WHS are only selling off the high street shops to Hobbycraft. - They're not selling the name. Hence the rebrand. - WHS will keep going in "travel", i.e. railway stations, airports, motorway services.

HIVEMIND: In the early 90s (maybe even late 80s?) we had a small, red machine called "Solve-It". It was a maths tester like a Speak & Math, with a speech synthesiser. When It started up, it played 4 notes and said "Solve It Level 1". I've scoured the internet and I can't find any mention anywhere.

Holy crap, it's soldered. After what felt like an eternity heating the board super-gently with the hot air gun on its lowest speed and its fattest nozzle, I'm really pleased with this result. Now the big question is: will it program? 🙏

Update on the 4MB #Psion 3mx. The hardware can definitely see the extra RAM, and I can write to it. But #EPOC16 no likey. Current guess is that the ramdrive driver doesn't like more than 2MB RAM. oldbytes.space/@thelastpsio... #retrocomputing

Thoughts on easing myself back into some Psion projects, a thread. Eating the elephant one bite at a time. oldbytes.space/@thelastpsio...

Ok, hear me out. A Lord of the Rings re-make, but with these two taking the One Ring to Mordor:

Taking apart Spectrum Elite has entered the 3D phase of things; and you can see how it starts to diverge from the original 6502 versions (as mentioned by Ric Pinto in Retro Gamer). That's the main loop more or less sorted, but lots of documenting left to do. Good fun though.

Quick question: Who here is into #retrocomputing more than #retrogaming? I get why retro gaming is a bigger community, but I want to hear from the people who are into the non-gaming side of vintage computing!

You’ve got a #Psion #Series5. Do you save it or swap it? If saving, then why? If swapping, then for what? #RetroSaveOrSwap #RetroComputing #ComputerHistory #VintageComputing

We are VERY excited to announce our first major retro event - RetroFest 2025, to be held at STEAM, the GWR museum in Swindon on 31st May / 1st June. Over 40 exhibitors will be bringing a vast range of computers from the 70s, 80s and 90s. More info - retrofest.uk

Couldn't possibly relate to this. Nope. 👀

HIVEMIND: Are there any good guides for designing flex PCBs in #KiCad? Thinking about trying my hand at recreating some Psion Series 3 screen ribbon cables.

“RP2040 has now been certified to run at a system clock of 200Mhz when using a regulator voltage of at least 1.15 volts.” github.com/raspberrypi/...

Wrote a bit about me hacking an extra 2MB RAM onto a #Psion Series 3mx. TL;DR: The hardware can see the RAM. A RAM dumping app can see the RAM. The OS couldn't, but now can and doesn't like it. Did I make a mistake? Don't know yet. To be continued. #retrocomputing oldbytes.space/@thelastpsio...

If you want more nerdery from me, I'm much more active over on #Mastodon. oldbytes.space/@thelastpsion
