Trump Says Recession Unfortunate But Necessary Step To Get To Depression

Up-to-date NWS upper air network map

NWS just announced a major reduction in upper-air (weather balloon) observations due to staffing shortages. Omaha and Rapid City losing balloon launches altogether, with launches cut in half at 6 other sites. Losing this many launches could affect severe weather forecasting and computer models.

NOAA Cuts Leave Wind Chimes As Sole Predictor Of Approaching Hurricanes

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

It seems almost unavoidable at this point that we are headed for a deep, deep recession. Just based on 200K+ federal firings & pullback of contracts, the March employment report (to be released April 4) seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020.

Me: BATMAN BEGINS is great, but I was amused by the writers’-fiat plot device that a place can be SO corrupt that some reasonably-organized foreign actor can just puppeteer it on a whim. Me, 20 years later: fuck

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

physics of climate impacts 101: - Stuff gets hot (worse heatwaves) - Hot air holds more water vapor (heavier rainfall) - Hot air is thirstier air (higher drought risk) - Warm water is hurricane food (stronger storms) - Hot water expands and hot ice melts (sea level rise)

Going to be keeping a close eye out for news on the Thwaites Glacier in the coming days... concerning if what I saw earlier is true. #DoomsdayGlacier

"We can't stop it anymore, but we owe it to our children to learn from it." Kris Van Steenbergen referring to the dooms day glacier Thwaites. 40% of the worlds population resides in coastal areas. I'm thinking we should teach our children to swim? 😳

The rise of anti-science is depressing and dangerous for everyone.

The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky
