Its rather delicious that this compelling take down of William Nordhaus by @profstevekeen.bsky.social was delivered at Yale University. No punches pulled. youtu.be/QGfaqALkc40

"Tipping points in the #climate... pose serious global risks, yet they remain largely absent from national security risk assessments. This discussion explores why these critical thresholds are being overlooked, the consequences of inaction, & what policy options could help close this dangerous gap"

Really important comment from Margaret. This is happening again and again, and it is dismaying, craven, and pathetic. Since when did it become OK for scientists to overlook evidence pertinent to the issue in question?

Now I've had a chance to read Andrea Sella's article in @chemistryworld.com on why he returned his Royal Society Faraday Medal. I recommend that you read it too. It's inspiring, though inevitably also disturbing, in these troubled times. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/why-...

In the absence of global climate mitigation, we project a regime shift to a world dominated by compound hazards or impacts. In our new paper by Gabriele Messori, we find that compound hazard occurrences will become the norm in many regions under RCP6.0 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Increase in methane emissions from fossil fuels has been underestimated. Our new PNAS paper just published today: www.pnas.org/doi/epub/10....

Some forecast models are showing the potential for record-breaking heat in the UK later in June 🌡️ Ensemble forecasts can help us better understand the extremes of the current climate. @hayleyjfowler.bsky.social, Paul Davies and I wrote about this last year theconversation.com/the-climate-...

We had a further back-and-forth with the New Zealand prime minister about NZs proposed methane target of 'no additional warming' that flies in the face of international climate pledges. It could be a disturbing precedent that actually moves us backwards on climate. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

I have a new TEDx talk on why climate change is a national security risk. It might provide some helpful points for public audiences. It builds upon my 20 years of scholarship and policy work in this space. #EnergySky www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8ne...

The plunder of our seas by industrial fishing is a monstrosity in which almost everyone unwittingly collaborates. For decades this truth has been deliberately hidden from us. Now at last the consensus is cracking. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This is such a perfect example of a society saying it understands climate risks but objectively demonstrating that it absolutely does not...! #climatescience #climaterisk

Here's something I post from time to time. My answer to a reader who asked me: what could journalists do NOW to break with some of their more corrosive habits.

😬

Uncertainty in the face of serious danger is of course no reason to ignore it. Passing that #AMOC tipping point by mid-century looks increasingly likely in light of recent studies. And there’s also a more imminent, albeit a bit less detrimental risk: bsky.app/profile/rahm...

Part of the reason this sort of baffles people is that we still don't widely understand just how intensely silly it is to get energy from old dead compressed plants Made this a few years ago but it's the same today: ~2/3rds of climate impacts relate to energy that was never 'used'

In Nature Human Behaviour, Peter Gleick calls on scientists who are able and willing to do so to speak out publicly against the Trump administration’s attack on science, and argues that although dissent carries risks, it is riskier to stay silent. go.nature.com/3FIV7cC 🧪

"You can’t have an economy without a society, & a society needs somewhere to live. Nature is our foundation, providing food, water & air, as well as the raw materials & energy... Threats to the stability of this foundation are risks to future human prosperity which we must take action to avoid"

Padilla: If this is how DHS responds to a senator with a question you can only imagine what they're doing to farm workers, to cooks, to day laborers out in the Los Angeles community and throughout California.

Sen. Alex Padilla, who was just forcibly removed from a DHS press conference, is the ranking member of Judiciary’s subcommittee on immigration, citizenship, and border safety, which has “oversight of federal agencies with citizenship, asylum, refugee, and immigration enforcement responsibilities.”

Senator Alex Padilla is one of the most decent people I know. This is outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful. Trump and his shock troops are out of control. This must end now.

Sitting US Senator Alex Padilla forcibly wrestled to the ground and arrested by the FBI for attempting to ask a question of DHS secretary Kristin Noem.

Understanding these "six truths" - it's real, it's us, experts agree, it's bad, others care, and there's hope - predicts pro-climate attitudes and support for climate policies, @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social finds. In particular, (see next post) ...

Instead of covering up its partnership with Woodside, Monash should rip it up altogether. Universities should be places that advance the public good, not help morally bankrupt companies like Woodside greenwash their reputation and muddy the science as they torch the planet for profit.
