This kind of surveillance and censorship is now ubiquitous in the United States and not just at the border. Someone should publish a letter in Harper’s about it. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

Considering what is happening in Iran, it should be remembered that the restrictions on Iran’s nuclear enrichment would have been lifted this year, and they would be much further from producing a nuclear weapon today if the deal remained intact. www.bbc.com/news/world-m...

Oops!

FOX MEMPHIS — STUDY: “States that weakened gun laws saw rise in child deaths… Tennessee is one of those states…. Policy matters…” Imagine that. Full: www.fox13memphis.com/news/states-...

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

This is a pretty important point!

Miller will stop at nothing

Every accusation is a confession

If a seven-year-old can’t walk to the store the fault lies not with the parents but with the community.

I think whoever brought these charges should be fired (into the sun).

This is why we have to have an entire free range children movement and also why a lot of us who agree with it in principle are nevertheless not instantiating.

Kids can’t go anywhere on their own, and their parents are expected to be a chauffeur. If parents do allow their kids to go somewhere on their own, they risk charges of child abuse or worse, like in this situation. Is this really what freedom is? How free are we, actually?

A publicly funded affordable housing project with 100 one-bedroom apartments came in at $800,000 per unit. The same developer built a mostly market rate building NEXT DOOR for $350,000/unit. www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

very fun to read frederick douglass accurately describe the problem with the pardon power in 1867

“…disabled people are actually less likely to drive than nondisabled people and more likely to get around by walking and rolling and taking transit. Car-heavy cities are also disproportionately dangerous for disabled folks…” @nondriver.bsky.social in @motherjones.com #Accessibility #MultiModal

In the wealthiest country in the world, this problem is a choice. It’s a choice made by the wealthy to preserve their own comfort.

63% of American adults had unfavorable views of Martin Luther King Jr in August 1966, per Gallup surveys 46% of Mississippi GOP voters said interracial marriage should be illegal in a 2011 PPP poll to push w/e is popular instead of trying to popularize justice is to admit you lack moral leadership

I love the part toward the end when an exec at Dominari was asked what expertise they bring to the table, and he said he didn't want to speak for them. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

500K Mexican-Americans served in the U.S. armed forces in WWII, as did millions of 1st and 2nd-gen immigrants, and 109K noncitizens. Mexican immigrant Macario Garcia won the Medal of Honor in Normandy. When he returned to the US, he was was arrested for trying to eat at a segregated restaurant.

Imagine being worth over $400 million and wanting to deny funding to nursing homes that would allow them to hire more staff and improve care. richmond.com/news/state-r...

Surely if there is any important takeaway from the "Biden old" story, it is that the media should be scrutinizing the current president's mental acuity far more carefully. "We should have done better" rings hollow if you studiously ignore the very obvious, ongoing replay of the same problem.

With a $20 ICE jacket off Etsy plus a neck gaiter (and maybe some ill-fitting, tacticool kit), you too can have a license to disappear people off the street.

A new study estimates that 19 million children in the U.S. have a parent with a substance use disorder and that alcohol is the most commonly used substance by the parents.

There is no plan. There is no 3D chess. The president has a toddler’s understanding of the economy and will continue to just do things (and then undo them, and then do them again).

It’s refreshing to see Christians actually practicing Christian values.

great piece on souter which gets to one of the late justice’s great qualities: his sense of his own fallibility as well as his small-c conservative disposition

Jamelle is right again

this guy is out here proudly being a eugenicist freak while people at mainstream and "respectable publications" make excuses for him or even muse about whether he has a "few good points"

This is authoritarianism

Yes, except Voice of America will be now featuring One America News. US govt once shared news so people living in authoritarian states had an alternative to state propaganda (eg Radio Free Europe). Now it is are producing the propaganda. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/...

It’s only a matter of time before one of these street assaults leads to a shoot out. And I’m not sure that’s not the administration’s intent

The rhetoric of the White House reveals a remarkable confidence that it knows better than you -- or the market -- who should gets what, who should do what, and who deserves what. I'm not sure what to call it -- perhaps central planning with a red hat rather than a red flag.

get his ass, leo www.npr.org/2025/05/09/g...

one thought i have reading this (great) thread is that the administration has been proceeding as if there is no chance they will ever face a crisis or a sudden challenge, and has destroy its capacity to respond to one should it arise

this guy hates this country, its laws and its traditions

OK, I’m told the feds released Mayor Barka rather than holding him over the weekend on the pretext they couldn’t get him before a judge. I am pleasantly surprised, through I suspect the decision was made on a lower level and that the people who made it may suffer.

The scary part of this article is when they mention that it's unclear whether or not India or Pakistan have second-strike capability. "Without this capability, there is, in theory, nothing to stop one side from launching a warhead at the other" apnews.com/article/paki...

This won't increase tax revenue because there will be much less trade. This will further deindustrialize America because the machine tools used for manufacturing, most of which are produced in China, will be much more expensive to import. www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

It’s shocking to me how many Americans and their political leaders believe in the absurd idea of the end times. This may also explain how so many Americans have been so easily overcome with conspiratorial thinking. www.bostonreview.net/articles/meg...
