Senior researcher in Ecohydrology at the University of Oslo. I study how climate change impacts carbon exchange across the Arctic-boreal region. Interested in the role of disturbances on vegetation dynamics and permafrost thaw.

Canada and Russia are experiencing intense early wildfire activity ahead of the boreal summer. CAMS is tracking smoke transport across vast distances, impacting atmospheric conditions as far away as Europe and the Arctic. Check out the full details atmosphere.copernicus.eu/cams-tracks-...

In case you’re interested in what’s targeted for termination in the Department of Energy budget, it looks like it is the entire environmental half of Biological and Environmental Research:

We have NASA's proposed budget for FY26, and it is brutal to science. Earth science would be cut by more than half. Astrophysics (like JWST, Hubble) by nearly two-thirds. Full details at www.nasa.gov/fy-2026-budg...

NSF budget proposal guts GRFP by 55%, kills the NRT (Research and Training Fellowship) program, and completely zeros out (yes, $0) nearly all postdoctoral fellowship programs, including Geosciences.

The very dire and scary situation unfortunately continues for NOAA Research - including across the federal labs, cooperative institutes, and program offices...

The village of Blatten in Switzerland is partly buried by the collapse of a glacier which melted because our greenhouse gas emissions warmed the climate. Another reminder that choosing to not invest enough today to reduce emissions means far greater costs for society in the long term.

Ten million posts about the state of AI and they’re all just iterations on a Shel Silverstein poem written when the Atari 400 cost half as much as a used car

Same in Europe. If we want US researchers to move over here, it has to go hand in hand with a structural increase in base funding. Otherwise it just increases the competition over already limited funds, with early career scientists on the losing end. This is the time to fix a broken system.

1/5 Just returned from 2 weeks at #Zackenberg Research Station @zackenberg.bsky.social (NE Greenland) to upgrade the #ICOS Ecosystem tower at the fen site GL-ZaF. Damages from polar bears had made the original structure vulnerable. Time for change.

Could this be the biggest climate story of the year? For the first time on record, China's emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand Full analysis + outlook by Lauri Myllyvirta: www.carbonbrief.org/... 1/7

If you need land cover datasets for the Arctic-boreal region, here is one great option for you at 1-km resolution: essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es.... It merges several regional products and separates dozens of key land cover types (e.g. bogs, fens, pine forest, spruce forest). 🌎🏞🏔

The ongoing campaign appears to be heading toward a point where no researchers at Harvard will receive federal funding.

My ongoing request: If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here. NSF: grant-watch.us/submit-nsf.h... NIH: grant-watch.us/submit-nih.h... Our trackers are actively used in lawsuits and are often the only record that terminations ever occurred.

“The NSF can be understood not only as a catalyst of scientific promise for national purpose, but also as a guarded response to fears about centralized control over knowledge and thought, shaped by the dark shadows of the Third Reich and the emerging Red Scare.”

1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

Our NOAA Climate Adaptation Partnership for the Northwest region was terminated this week. I'm so proud of the work we did to support the climate resilience efforts of frontline communities and Tribal Nations. And I'm deeply concerned for what the loss of this support means for NW communities.

There’s so much happening right now, I thought I’d put together a running thread on the dismantling of #climate and research and knowledge infrastructure in the United States 🧵

Hey frens! @agu.org has these great template letters you can send your representaives to ask them to support funding to NSF and NASA. Make sure to quickly personalize it with your name! agu.quorum.us/campaign/121...

This is all very flashy but are they going to create new permanent positions so these scientists that come to Europe, and the ones already here, can have a life? Or are we just stomping on ECRs again? #academia 🧪

These ‘let’s attract the hot-shot researchers’ calls ring very hollow to me. Climate science is a team sport. It takes a whole set of skills. We need to be thinking about how to keep critical -teams- integrated. Nabbing hero-model scientist types is not going to retain institutional expertise.

FYI: The Spencer Foundation, Kapor Foundation, The William T. Grant Foundation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have collaborated to offer $25K rapid response grants. "This rapid response bridge funding opportunity is for scholars and teams whose grants have recently been cancelled by NSF."

Important to remind everyone that this is an ILLEGAL DIRECTIVE from the Executive Branch (impoundment).

In between the stories of horrific human rights abuses and trade war insanity I remember that they have also destroyed all our research and data infrastructure and effectively ended any environmental, health, or labor regulation.

Only a few days left to apply to this exciting PhD position on modeling Arctic-boreal vegetation and the impacts from more variable winter weather!

For those at #EGU25: Hope you can drop by for my talk, today at 11:20 in room 2.23!

“The American public needs to understand that you can’t just turn a science switch off and then turn it back on again,” said Rick Spinrad. Great reporting by @sachimulkey.bsky.social on the current dismantling of US scientific research capacity: what it means for now--and for future generations.

Glad to be back at #EGU25! Want to know how the Arctic carbon cycle is affected by shifts in snow cover? Come see my talk this Thursday, at 11:20 in room 2.23 (session BG3.19). meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU25/EGU25-...

GISS has famously been located above the Seinfeld restaurant for decades. Reprisal against Columbia or climate -- or both? GSA cancelled the lease, not NASA, a source says. GISS does not house supercompute -- its climate models are run at NASA Goddard in Md. Still a major disruption for its staff.

At #EGU25 next week, Editor Gil Bohrer will be available for 15-minute meetings to share advice on publishing in JGR: Biogeosciences! This is a great opportunity for #EarlyCareer researchers! 🔗Sign up here: lite.spr.ly/6006GtQG #Vienna #STEM #Biogeosciences #Publishing #EGU @egu.eu @agu.org
