Given Woolies' margins are well under 6%, a 10% shelf price drop would, on average, mean making a loss. Unless... - Prices rise elsewhere (unlikely) or - Suppliers are being leant on to fund it (very likely) (The funding might also come from fewer/shallower price discounts.)

Paul Keating wouldn't recognise modern politics: "I always believed in burning up the government’s political capital, not being Mr Safe Guy, you know?" But PM, it's time to take a leaf out of his book. You have the political capital. Ban. Gambling. Ads. Now.

This is not a good sign for Australia. AI certainly has its risks and downsides. But it's going to be a huge part of our lives, and economy. Caution is warranted. But we risk being left behind.

105 controlled vaccine trials. 110 yrs. 1.8 M participants. All in one live, crowd-sourced sheet. Built by contributors worldwide to counter the myth that vaccines weren’t tested with controls. Quiet work still breaks through the noise. www.bradspellberg.com/vaccine-rcts @bradspellberg.bsky.social

Just imagine what we could have with a properly funded, general purpose #SovereignWealthFund. Come on, @jimchalmers.bsky.social and @albomp.bsky.social, this could be your govt's legacy in the style of Keating's Super and Costello's narrow-purpose SWF. www.canberratimes.com.au/story/895950...

With the greatest respect to the people who put their intellectual energy into these things, there's no possible way that the odds of a recession can be calculated to the sort of precision that '42.5%' would suggest. #ausbiz

Honestly, if your view is that the LNP lost because they weren't 'right' enough, you need to look again at the results. The LNP lost votes to the *left*, not the right. Realpolitik doesn't care about your ideology. #auspol

Will be voting this morning. Given the lack of serious commitment to many our national problems by either major party, I'll be preferencing them last in the House of Reps. I'll also number every Senate box under the line. 1/2 #PutTheMajorsLast #auspol

Not a surprise, unfortunately. But terrible. Another reason to #PutTheMajorsLast

Nice to see inflation (just) within the RBA's target: the underlying inflation number now 2.9%. Governor Bullock has repeatedly used two other words: 1. 'Sustainably' - the RBA wants to know it won't jump up again; and 2. 'Midpoint' - just under 3% isn't enough. #auspol 1/2

The most important three words when someone (including ourselves) propose a solution to a problem? "And then what?" Always consider the second-, third-, fourth- etc impacts of any course of action.

Absolutely ridiculous. Apparently Facebook made almost no profit here in Australia, because most of the revenue was paid to overseas units of the same business... Right.

Three thoughts: 1. The Coalition campaign is a hot mess of backflips 2. The EV subsidy was always terrible policy - most buyers were going to buy one anyway 3. Novated leases are awful tax policy and should be removed. #auspol

The HECS/HELP system isn't the problem for students and graduates. It's the price of tuition itself. #auspol

Native forest logging is dumb - environmentally and economically. And it's not just me saying it - it's Ken Henry. Plantation timber is a wonderful renewable resource that we should be doing more of, and with.

Spot on. There was a time the majors cared (or at least pretended to care) about the state of our national finances. Now? No interest. It doesn't even get mentioned. They're too busy bribing us with our own money, and leaving debt for our kids. (Source: AFR homepage) #auspol

Yep. John Kehoe nails it. The major parties' economic offerings are essentially just election bribes. A good election to be - and vote for - an independent or minor party, I reckon #auspol
