A once-mighty #NASA astrophysics fleet—revolutionizing our view of the cosmos—is now being dismantled before our eyes. ❌ TESS, Chandra, Fermi, IXPE, UVEX… ❌ 20+ missions canceled, gutted, or abandoned. ❌ A generation of discovery, erased. This isn’t belt-tightening. It’s self-inflicted blindness.🔭

For those who missed it, the best radio telescope on the planet for most science (including my own), the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, faces “reduced service” in the budget. Things already worked and been running for decades. I guess it’ll literally just be turned off part of the day? 🔭🧪

#OnThisDay in 1921, the Tulsa race massacre killed up to 300 & left 10,000 homeless. “They tried to kill all the Black folks they could see,” recalled George Monroe, who was 5 at the time. A 7,000-square-foot museum, Greenwood Rising, now honors that community. mississippitoday.org/2025/05/31/o...

Department of Homeland Security officers invading a congressman's offices and arresting a staffer who tried to stop them is very, very bad. gothamist.com/news/homelan...

“Xi is pushing many of the best and the brightest to leave China…The U.S. should be taking advantage of this historic brain drain, not shutting the door to many talented Chinese young people.” www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/b...

The antigovernment people don’t mind if you die early. Yes, we’re all going to die. The question for people and the governments they institute is: How long will you live, and how well? To paraphrase Reagan, “In our current condition, government is not the problem, government is the solution.”

I can’t think of a presidency that has done more open and undeniable damage to this country, and the wider world, in such a short space of time, than this one. Shocking, despicable:

Cutting research at the National Science Foundation by more than half(!) is intentionally sabotaging the future. These are contracts the federal government competitively awards to universities to develop breakthroughs and train graduate students to become future leaders & experts. Future is at risk.

In the first episode of The World at War (1973) Laurence Olivier intoned, "There was to be a cultural revolution, too...the books flew into the fire...and as the sparks rose, the intellectuals fled--writers & scientists--to give their talents to Western Europe, & America." We've seen this movie...😒

Awful for the future of science in the US, and for university budgets. And utterly unfair for current grad students and recent PhDs.

And, it worked. The US has led the world, both in developing its own talented folks and in drawing some of the best minds & hands from around the world. But, let's break it and sell it for parts.

These are the guys who want to take over our universities. This is what happen when they do.

New from me: I am a professor of public administration, and I have a radical proposal - President's should not put people with significant drug problems in charge of our government. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/presidents...

And remember, for many Evangelical Christo-fascists, this world is but a prelude to the Heavenly World of being with our Lord. So an early Earthly death is merely an early entry into the Heavenly kingdom to live the true Life with our Lord.

Once again, the Supreme Court's "Equal Justice Under Law" is the emptiest promise in America.

The amount of space this particular strip occupies in my mind and has since I was a kid is hard to convey.

Good morning. Immigrants are #HereToStay.

White collar crime: it pays.

Echoes of an American term from the 19th Century: resettlement. Of indigenous people, in our case. Ethnic cleansing is the result in both cases.

Is there a “false cite” equivalent to “false flag”? If negligent or reckless, is such false citation a form of academic misconduct?

Other than the wildly unconstitutional & illegal destruction of swathes of the government, the wildly unconstitutional & illegal security violations, & the millions who will die because of the destruction of USAID, sure. Journalism, what is it, anyway?

What it made me realize is what a small amount of money it takes to get people out of poverty.

Under-known part of Big Beautiful Bill: “would introduce the most sig & costly new fed educ program in decades…virtually no quality-control…transparency…, protections against discrimination, or evidence…that it [will] improve…outcomes. It’s…likely to redirect funds from poor…areas to wealthy areas.”

Somewhere, Dante is making a snowball.

Yeah, no. Fuck’em Bucky.

Grift all the way down

Under attack? Counterattack! It confuses the hell out of the enemy.

Elon is out. Trump's tariffs are out. We are keeping up the pressure and holding the GOP to account. We will not stand for their agenda of chaos, corruption, and greed.

Update: reports today that multiple legal observers were arrested today in New York at two separate immigration courts, for allegedly “obstructing” ICE. Not only that, apparently some immigration courts are barring the public from attending hearings. This mess is escalating fast.

Even Samuel Clemens could not write a worthy biography of Mark Twain. And Garrison Keillor wrote one of the most courageous paragraphs in American letters, in my opinion (esp. including the phrase 'the first two-thirds of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn'). www.nytimes.com/2010/12/19/b...

It’s called a Lie when Trump and Trumpers claim January 6 was anything less than a violent assault on the Capitol & attempted coup on Congress as the houses convened to count the electoral votes. (Also: Why didn’t the Capitol police fire their weapons as the attackers breached the Capitol?)

“I feared for my life” can be artfully imagined but not willfully constructed.

Surprising good news: SCOTUS unanimously (!!) strikes down a bonkers 5th Cir op (redundant, I know) that allowed a cop to needlessly, excessively, and recklessly put himself in harm’s way and then use that same fear of harm he created to justify killing someone.

This is crass cost-cutting wrapped in junk science as justification. Removing these recommendations means Medicaid will no longer automatically cover Covid vaccines for kids and pregnant people, who make up about half of all Medicaid recipients. It's "saving" money by forcing the vulnerable to pay.

I wish this was hyperbole but the facts speak for themselves. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-trump-...

Whoa. This is bad. This is badass. This is what I remember when today's politicians intone, "Violence has no place in American politics." Like hell it doesn't.

"If it's good enough for the kids of the rich, then it's good enough for the kids of the poor." The founding premise and promise of public higher education in the USA. (See Northwest Ordinance 1787 and the Morrill Act 1862.)

The House budget is a health care cataclysm for America. 15 million Americans will lose their health care. That's the total combined population of: West Virginia Hawaii New Hampshire Wyoming Vermont DC Alaska North Dakota South Dakota Delaware Rhode Island Montana Maine

This guy stole $10 million from the employees of his nursing home to buy himself a luxury yacht and Cartier watches. He PLED GUILTY. And because his Mom gave Trump $1 million, he just got a pardon. And this story barely makes the news today. WTF. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/27/u...

Trump is waterboarding us.

Muted, muffled, and muzzled is no way to go through life. Profiles in Fecklessness.
