Dispatches from the Hot Culture War: It’s official - Trump has lost the Battle of LA.

I wasn’t into this sort of take a few years ago, but watching the extremism of the 2024 MAGA election, the 2025 billionaire inauguration, the fecklessness of many D leaders now, and the fawning and apologism of so many of the rich and powerful … I’m thoroughly with it now.

I’m at a loss for words at the wimpishness of these guys at a true pivot point in American history.

To understand the basics of white nationalist and Nazi/Nazi-adjacent mainstreaming strategies, you need look no further than the history of Trump’s reactions to Juneteenth — where he was officially 5 years ago and where he is now: www.npr.org/2025/06/20/g...

COMMENTARY: It takes a great country to admit its mistakes. The Trump administration's new signs at Colorado's National Historic Sites reflect weakness and insecurity.

No stock take of 2003 war madness would be complete without Friedman’s explanation of what the war was about for him: “they need to see American boys — and girls — going house to house, from Basra to Baghdad, basically saying … ‘suck on this’”.

This is a huge deal. Watershed moment.

Everyone, breathe out

Happy Juneteenth! And a reminder that it took the George Floyd murder and the BLM eruption of protests to make this day, long celebrated by black communities, a Congressionally recognized holiday in 2021.

Make America 2020 again

"Two... defense officials... were briefed that perhaps only a tactical nuclear weapon could be capable of destroying Fordow because of how deeply it is buried. "Trump is not considering using a tactical nuclear weapon on Fordow."

A growing military presence near the border with Finland presents strong evidence that Russia is, in fact, capable of waging a full-scale war in Ukraine while simultaneously bolstering its troops and armaments against NATO’s second-newest member. meduza.io/en/feature/2...

Ted Cruz (this is his post) is rightly in trouble and flailing - a rare thing. But why he is feeling more heat than Mike Lee right now is gobsmacking.

Astonishing that only 16% of Americans think the US should join Israel’s war on Iran but so few Democrats are speaking out against it. The gaping disconnect between Dem politicians and the Dem base we saw on Gaza continues to cripple effective opposition.

Endorse. This is exactly what we need and urgently. Otherwise there is no serious and attractive alternative that Ds will ever be able to offer vs the GOP that meets the many crises out there.

Tucker Carlson's interview laid bare that Ted Cruz hasn't bothered to truly inform himself about Iran and that he's not someone whose opinion anyone should give any weight to. It's sad that it took someone as awful as Carlson, who is no journalist, to do what real journalists should've been doing.

The worst people in America are fighting, which means I can take a nap. Sweet dreams.

Right. At trump rallies I attended, biggest cheers of the day were often for Trump saying he’s the first president in X years to not get America involved in another war (even though that’s actually not true)

This is exactly the right tone when privileged people suffer minor or temporary consequences standing up for powerless people. It’s still about the powerless people. ICE is Gestapo trash.

So grateful to our Great Leader for this glorious announcement of the timing of the digging of two holes, into which “the most magnificent poles [ever] made” shall be placed.

Looks like snark, but actually stone cold history.

Downright serious. The event history of how this symbol is used is properly chilling.

This is one of those places where it really is just pure money in politics.

For the “for God’s sake use your power” section

Brad has been released and the crowd breaks into a chant of “Free them all.”

Preach, Mani

A reminder that this young man is going through this protracted torment because the Trump admin didn’t like his expression of his solidly moderate views last year.

If you’re still of the opinion that “protests don’t matter” I’d like you to take note of all the quisling Democrats this week who are belatedly noticing that their future careers now clearly depend on them fucking DOING something

Gov. Kathy Hochul says “the charges have been dropped” against Brad Lander.

Change to what, via who? Even in the dumb recent history of regime change polices, this is several orders of magnitude more stupid.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? Empathy is vital to defeating your enemy’s militarily. Or, to be more precise, it’s essential to converting the outcome of military operations into desirable and lasting political results.

I would like my national press to highlight this crisis is because the guys launching the war insisted on killing the JCPOA, which would have prevented the war. That factor is strikingly absent.

Can confirm. And that this isn’t an exaggeration and that it’s a view shared by tens of millions of American voters.

Images and news like this is what makes me laugh/cry at prominent intellectuals like Niall Ferguson who have endlessly insisted the real internal threat to Western society is “the Red Guards” (direct quote of NF) …

Turns out that, when detention without due process by cops that don’t identify themselves started in Jan, the winning argument to get D leaders to actually get their arse in gear wasn’t “they could do this to anyone”, but to tell those politicians specifically that “they’re going do this to YOU!” 🤨

A factor that we all need to note more is that Netanyahu, in campaigning aggressively against the JCPOA, was willing to risk Iran getting a nuclear weapon in order to prevent even small steps towards Iranian-Western diplomatic normalization.
