Fascinating stuff. A seemingly small edge at the margin yields significant WPA returns.

I also don’t agree with the assertion that folks in small, rural towns “don’t care about your lifestyle until you look down your nose.”
As a proud product of a small rural town, I can assure you folks in those areas absolutely care about social/lifestyle issues and they are extremely opinionated.

Yes they are - unfortunately they’re playing to an audience that’s been shaped & taught that this stuff is strength but conservative leadership over the past 4-5 decades. Shame on all of you for that Bill.

George Mason School of Law grad here - I wish our Dean had 1/10th of the backbone and respect for the rule of law as Dean Treanor.

Liberal Dem here Kevin. In my opinion, in Trump 1.0 Dems fought tooth & nail and prevented a lot of pain. That success led to millions of moderate voters voting for Trump 2.0 b/c he wasn’t “that bad”. People need to understand how detrimental the policies they voted for are in my opinion.

Ugh. San Diego resident here who won't directly benefit from the LA-SF train, but the criticism I've seen has been the opposite of reasonable. "It's expensive" isn't a valid critic all things considered.

Liberal here. Bill Clinton did the same thing. 🤷♂️

Proud Liberal here. While I want my representatives to oppose illegality, it’s clear that America voted for a lot of what we are seeing. If it takes a few hundred thousand people and an economic downturn for those Americans to learn that modern conservatism is a scam, perhaps it’s necessary pain?

2026 rotation isn’t ideal, but I’d argue Yu, Musgrove, Vasquez, and Waldron are strong bones. Obviously need to add another big arm though, and hope for some of our younger arms to develop. Keep the faith Chris!

Really? Appreciate your views Chris but if De Vries and Salas are as advertised, it’s hard for me not to see us as contenders. Tatis, Merrill, Machado are borderline superstars. How many teams have 3 All Star Starters?

Stan for the Everth Cabrera era all you want. I prefer playoffs in 3 of the last 5 years (1 of the years we missed it was by 1 loss to the Snakes). This is unquestionably the best 5 year run in Padre history, & we’re winning with exciting players.
Stay mad.

Liberal here but I subscribe to Cowen’s podcast in an effort to hear the entire argument. Very disappointing, but yet revealing, to see him celebrating this.

Isn’t this Musk doing everything in plain sight that conservatives complained Dorsey’s Twitter was doing without evidence? The hypocrisy is smothering.

“I hate it here” is over the top. We have problems and the next 4 years will test our patience, but expressing hate for the country is a bad start.

Per my models*, Xander’s game projects to age well. And don’t forget to discount that $ that is so far away. 👀

Is 25M/yr for a 3-4 fWAR 2B who’s also a + clubhouse guy that bad? I’m glad Seidler planted some flagpoles; AJ’s the perfect GM to build around the Manny/X/Tatis 3some.

In fairness Will, this political strategy had the advantage of also being the right thing to do, economically and morally. Hard to fault Joe for good governance even if the political capital didn’t flow back as it should have.

Will’s 100% correct here. The fact that there are broad economic gains among lower wage earners doesn’t mean homelessness can’t be increasing or a problem. Will even says so.

Is Xander’s contract as bad as we think it is? Current FA market is ~ $10M per fWAR, so for the next 9 years we’re paying Xander as if he’s a 2.5 WAR player per year. He had a rough 2024 for sure.
More importantly, when is the next Gwynntelligence pod? Is HJ still on that Nazi site?

Hardcore Preller stan here, but 3 Rule 5 guys?!? Does this tip the FO’s hand as to how they plan to build the roster? Too early to freak out but I still have 2017 seared in my brain. Too soon.
Nunez sounds interesting though. If you’re going to gamble, betting on swing & miss stuff is fun.

Profar is such a unique case. 2024 was such an outlier but the underlying metrics suggest his production is sustainable. And we all know his vibes are literally worth millions chemistry wise.
When you find special people, sometimes you have to go against conventional wisdom. Profar is special.

I agree a trade is likely. But imagine a world where Peter hadn’t signed Manny, Fernando, Jake, and Xander to long term deals. Are you confident our new leadership would spend to the levels we are at now? I’m not.
