Pouring out a vodka chlorine for the original big guy, Joe Don Baker

The law professors who are arguing against birthright citizenship in the US are reinventing a common law decision from 1677 about allegiance and aliens that was pivotal for creating a common law of slavery in England’s empire. — a logic recreated in Dred Scot. — rejected by 14th amendment.

I'm a Joe Don Baker guy, but @dhm.bsky.social is right that there's no real considering the broader body of his work without including him getting dragged to hell by the MST3K guys. defector.com/mitchell-is-...

Sauer keeps saying the amendment was suppose to apply to "former slaves" but the actual text of the 14th amendment is "all persons born or naturalized in the united sates," i thought conservatives were big text guys

one of the many infuriating things about this is that if the authors of the amendment wanted it to apply exclusively to the formerly enslaved they had the capacity to do so! they would have written it that way! they didn't!

Scores of lawsuits paint a picture of a president threatening to become exactly what the framers feared: an all-powerful executive who acts more like a king than a democratic leader.

16 former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau officials who served at the agency across multiple administrations explain why Congress, and only Congress, has the power to amend or repeal the law that established the agency. Not presidents. bit.ly/4ddXlNh

Bears repeating:

Former Consumer Financial Protection Bureau officials who served across Republican and Democratic administrations stepped up today to say: "[T]here is nothing remotely 'regular' about the recent transition." Read their full amicus brief here: www.bloomberglaw.com/public/deskt...

The way we were treated at Delaney Hall is almost unbelievable. ICE shoved me, manhandled @repbonnie.bsky.social, and arrested Mayor Baraka. They disrespected us and tried to stop us from conducting the oversight we’re elected to do. But we’ll never back down in our fight for what is right.

Today friend-of-the-court briefs are due in National Treasury Employees Union v. Vought, a case challenging the administration's effort to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau before the D.C. Circuit Court. Here's why this case matters. (1/4)

This is another unconstitutional notion. Only Congress can suspend habeas corpus and only during rebellion or invasion. As a Trump-appointed judge recently found, the U.S. isn't under invasion.

HAPPENING NOW: Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was just taken into custody while protesting outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention center

NEW: President Trump's policies and actions have been stopped by US courts more than 200 times. We've been tracking lawsuits from the moment he was sworn in, identifying at least 320+ by the start of May -- and more keep coming. A deep, deep dive into the data: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

A federal court ruled Justice Allison Riggs won her election to the NC Sup Ct b/c she got the most votes & you can't "change the rules of the game after it had been played." A state court previously tossed many votes, incl overseas votes of members of our client @usvotefoundation.bsky.social.

It was a good one! There were readings and cake! @nyreviewofarch.bsky.social
