Perpetual reminder that Worksafe was set up following the recommendations of a completely independent expert Royal Commission responding to mass workplace deaths at Pike River.

"Musk is a greedy kleptocrat whose life’s work boils down to stealing from the poor to pad his own bottom line. That’s his legacy. He could’ve changed the world for the better; he had every resource available to him to do so. Instead, he made it markedly worse."

NZ’s version of the end times derangement that’s gripping the US and UK has a running theme of obstinate, cruel politicians in thrall to the failed policies of the past.

In life, be a Marilyn Waring, not a Ruth Richardson. A Don MacGlashan, not a Chris Bishop.

I think a lot about how Aaron Swartz committed suicide while facing a probably long jail sentence for download some of JSTOR, but no one at Meta is going to face any repercussions for using all of Libgen to train its AI.

Richardson’s sociopathic mother of all budgets cost me a business and a relationship and gave me an ulcer it took a year to recover from. All politics is personal, sooner or later. So fuck that woman and everything she stands for, and I will be lining up to piss on her grave.

And she increased the age of the “youth benefit” to 25. I got smacked twice, reduction in benefit and dropped back to the youth rate. Luckily I was able to move back in with my parents …

Great thread. The last skeet is the most poignant: "Honouring [Ruth] Richardson in public for this now is the government giving a massive middle finger to the rest of the country, especially those who were harmed and hurt by these reforms." #nzpol

If you’re not following @musicalchairs.bsky.social yet, then the day of Ruth Richardson’s ascension to gong-wearer is the right day to start #nzpol

By coincidence the US economist Paul Krugman's latest substack is about the growth in US inequality after 1980. Amidst the frankly alarming graphs is one relating to Union density/membership which seems very relevant for discussing Ruth Richardson's legacy paulkrugman.substack.com/p/understand...

How toxic is Richardson's legacy? It's been 31 years since she left Parliament. In that time Bolger, Shipley, Key & English all chose not to give her a gong. I can't find any other example of such a long gap for an award. She & Joyce were the only two National Ministers of Finance not yet knighted.

As expected @musicalchairs.bsky.social has the receipts to show Ruthenasia was just that, a destructive economic era which permanently scarred our economy.

Warnings and promises … a 🧵 Giving Ruth Richardson a gong in the midst of the biggest economic downturn in a generation isn’t just the usual cronyism: it’s a warning and a promise and a statement of intent. We should treat it as such. 1/

Happy Feudal Relic Day whanāu! Kia pa to rā!

Your key takeaway from the brilliant Ukraine attack with small drones into Russia shouldn’t be “wow, small drones make it so easy to score huge hits,” it should be “wow, Ukrainians are insanely good at covertly planning and executing extraordinarily difficult missions of which drones are one part”.

‘Your words of “discomfort, loss, and disconnection” don’t resonate with me at all.’ So now Ruth Richardson is now a dame for services as an MP and 'governance'. I can think of a lot of her actions which don't resonate with me either. 😡 www.bwb.co.nz/books/ruth-r...

Digging around I found this OECD graph. It's from 2022, so TBF does represent a peak year because of the borders re-opening but it still illustrates my point about our reliance on migration. We're way above the OECD average for that year - 13 or 14 fold higher at a guess.

Seconded

I'm trying to imagine ChlĂśe Swarbrick or Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke ever hearing the end of it if they decided to bless the audience at an NZSO or NZ Ballet gala with drunken colour commentary on what a load of colonized elitist crap the whole evening was. You having better luck?

Chris Bishop is trying to change the regulations to allow cattle to graze in wetlands and allow quarry companies to dig up wetlands. Less than 10% of original wetlands remain in NZ. I think I know what Don McGlashan would say.

I'd like to report a murder😄

Reader he was wrong, very, very wrong. Quite extraordinary effort by Simon Yates.

Been mulling over Luxon telling business leaders he & they know all about making difficult trade-offs. He's framed this trade-off as between a Ferrari & a Corolla but the opposition parties, & Labour in particular, need to frame it as between paying underpaid women their due & taxing the wealthy.

Counterpoint; this is hilarious 🔥🤣 “The only really mean comment I can find in the book is about … David Seymour, & it’s laugh-out-loud funny: she was overheard on camera calling him “an arrogant prick”, & is relieved when her aide tells her about it. She thought she’d called him a “fucking prick”.”

We have a friend of Tina's visiting from Australia at the moment. She cannot believe the shadiness of the pay equity legislation, actually open-mouthed at the cynicism of that and how McKee is now responsible for the firearms legislation. When Australians think it's dodgy AF, you know it's bad.

Never has any leader had so many people wanting to make the argument that “not wearing any clothes actually makes the emperor better dressed if you think about it.”
