I'll be presenting my jerboa and mouse tail research at #ICDB2025 @socdevbio.bsky.social this week during the 'Role of Scaling in Development and Evolution' session on Friday. Hope to see you there!!

I’ll believe it when I see ONE grant get restored. Until then, maybe we should all just keep fighting, because this administration does not listen to judicial rulings.

Randomly got drawn into singing Kokomo with 'some old guy' as the train pulled into Santa Barbara, and he said "Thats me! I'm a Beach Boy". I laughed, got of the train, and googled who are the Beach Boys. It was Bruce Johnston.

Colossal Bioscience is a dark look at the future of science in the US as federal funding declines and dependence on philanthropy increases. Incentives to impress the investors of a $10 billion private valuation drive the need for flashy press over quality science.

How weak and afraid must one be to launch such a ridiculous and obvious smear campaign?

Oh hell no. If you're going for Vinny, there are a whole bunch of us you'll have to go through first.

The senators at this appropriations hearing across the board are destroying the proposed NIH budget. The only person who doesn’t seem to be fighting for the future of the NIH..is its own director 😑

🔈 Honored to welcome Mansi Srivastava as an invited speaker at #ICDB2025! Mansi investigates regeneration and stem cell evolution in acoels, tracing the origins of whole-body regeneration across the animal kingdom. 🧫🌍🔁🧪

Jessica Whited @jesslamae.bsky.social will talk a-lotl about axolotl at #ICDB2025. Jessica's group is using salamanders to understand regeneration of missing limbs and how the process works at the molecular level 🦎🧪

Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and Trump didn't call in the National Guard.

Happening today at noon!

you’re laughing? the leopards have resorted to cannibalism and you’re LAUGHING?

It took just 15 years to get from Citizens United to this

And yet he's materially no worse off for it.

it’s funny that they’re both on their own personal websites posting their little posts

must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

Quick. Somebody tell Trump that the best way to own Elon is to restore all research grants and double NSF funding.

The accurate tone of this piece is "It makes me so very tired that I have to explain this..."

Back in civilization for about an hour. Tissues collected to sequence 6 jerboa species genomes so far. Haven't showered in a week, and I 'took my shovel for a walk' during a sandstorm today. I'd still so much rather be here than there right now.

Rabbit hole warning - here are 20 years of my travel journals, starting with a post grad school SE Asia trip and covering each jerboa field collection in China. I'll write from Mongolia and update this when I can. www.phdtraveler.blogspot.com

My out off office until May 30th... 42°28'44.8"N 105°15'18.7"E Blissfully unplugged in Mongolia, catching jerboas.

You know what I wish the more human-centered tech conferences would do right now? Open up special tickets and speaking slots for scientists whose work is getting axed and whose fields are being obliterated right now.

I haven't talked about the possible future need to euthanize the jerboa colony if our funding delay turns into a termination, but it's haunting me. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/29/s...

Great new work led by @biomarina-vg.bsky.social on zebrafish meninges! Particularly 🤩 is the descriptions of ependymin-expressing meningeal cells (not a fibroblast!) & ablation studies showing their essential role in viability. So much more to learn! Congrats Marina & team on this great work! 🦓🐟🧠

Please read this. My daughter is profoundly affected by Angelman Syndrome. She cannot speak or walk and needs assistance with every aspect of daily living. She is also phenomenal. She is loved by her family and friends. She brings joy to any room she is in. She loves fiercely and is loyal. /1

In 3 weeks, I'll be with a team in Mongolia, self-supported camping in the remote desert catching jerboas for 3 weeks, and I'm more nervous about coming back into the US.

Nobody ever tells you how hard it is to keep up with your inbox and your deadlines during a fascist takeover.

I heard the same from a Harvard faculty friend today.
