If you have a chance to see the new Swedish documentary on the dire state of fish stocks and fisheries in the Baltic Sea, please do. We need a public debate on this issue also among our neighbours around the Baltic to find the political will to change the current dysfunctional system.

Haven't looked into it, but seems certainly a significant number. news.nationalgeographic.org/study-bottom...

Interesting study linking MPA guide with conservation outcomes. Link ➡️ www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Constructive and encouraging discusions today at the Baltic Sea seminar in Stockholm, on how to strengthen herring populations and restore ecosystem functions. Strong lineup of speakers, with the Swedish fisheries minister Kullgren, EU MEP Isabella Lövin among many others.

Land rise, has been a prominent feature of the coastal zone of the northern Baltic Sea since the last glaciation. Not so anymore, as the rate of sea level rise will nullify land rise for the rest of the century. For large portions of our European coasts though, prospects are much bleaker.

If you haven't followed the documentary Fiskarnas rike, you are in for a treat. Important tales about the world of fishes, with absolutely marvellous, BBC-quality, sequences of our Nordic species. Seven episodes in total, the last one broadcasted tomorrow.

Post doc at SLU Aqua - Mapping aquatic resources in a changing climate (based at our Uppsala, Sweden campus). Fluency in English & R programming skills are key requirements. I can highly recommend working with A/Prof Charlotte Berkström & @ulfbergstrom.bsky.social 🦑🧪🌎🐠 www.slu.se/en/about-slu...

If you think slowing or stopping #climate change is too expensive, you have it backwards. Failing to slow or stop #climatechange is what's expensive. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Mapping changes in temperature: 2024 edition

Atlantic herring is one of the most abundant fishes in the world. In two new studies, we show that some herring in the Baltic Sea have become fish eaters. These piscivorous herring are genetically unique, grow fast, and play an important role in regulating stickleback populations.

Beautiful way of drawing attention to an important message

🚨🚨🚨 2024 was the warmest year on record globally. An astounding 32% of the Earth had it's single warmest year since 1940. 🔥🔥🔥

The densest water in the world ocean forms around Antarctica, and then spreads out to flood the global abyss. We’ve seen the production of this water dwindle over the past few decades, a change that is now impacting the North Atlantic. 🌊🧪❄️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A trophic cascade of 🦦&🦀: "Sea otters ate multiple crab species, allowing snails, which crabs eat, to thrive. The snails then ate more algae that had blocked sunlight from reaching the sea grass. More sea grass provided protection for young fish and food for migratory birds."🧪🦑🎁 wapo.st/4gUouFX

The new @IPBES report has some jaw-dropping data everywhere, e.g: >The private sector spends $5.3 trillion/year directly damaging biodiversity >Government spend $1.7 trillion/year incentivizing destroying biodiversity We are a self-destructive species ipbes.canto.de/index_mobile...

Science ftw!

Exciting postdoc position open at SLU Aqua, on species distribution modelling, climate change, nutrition and conservation. The postdoc will be doing spatial modelling in the Indian Ocean and the Baltic Sea, get a broad network and a bunch of fantastic colleagues: lnkd.in/dXG2Zm4m

What Banksy says…

We finally have an explanation for 2023’s record-breaking temperatures A decline in cloud cover means Earth is absorbing more solar radiation which could explain the 0.2°C of missing heat scientists are struggling to account for www.newscientist.com/article/2458... docs.google.com/document/d/1...

New study out showing that plenty of neighbours and few top predators make predatory fish populations more resilient to a coastal regime shift. Read it here: www.nature.com/articles/s41....

Global ocean temperatures have officially gone off the chart. We are in a climate emergency.
