What is the smallest positive integer that can be written as a sum of the squares of two or more consecutive positive integers THREE different ways? ... I answered this question with brute force ( #Mathematica), but I'm wondering if there's a tech-free way to approach it. #WonderWithMe

Today I wrote out the first few terms of a sequence a_n and asked a student to give me a definition for a_n that was either recursive (in terms of a_{n-1}) or explicit (in terms of n). She gave me one that had both a_{n-1} and n in it, and said that it refused to conform to the binary. #iTeachMath

An arithmetic sequence puzzle by @unsolvedmre.bsky.social (This took me like an hour to solve so pity likes are appreciated lol)

If we were teaching math properly, students wouldn't even see A.I. as being able to "do it for them"

I feel like the more ubiquitous A.I. becomes, the more critical it will be for us to make SENSE-MAKING a central focus of math education. #iTeachMath

Ok I will #TryMathsLive with this from @unsolvedmre.bsky.social, with a push from @mathforlove.bsky.social. (Note it’s not quite live, since we did it at One Hundred Factorial yesterday, but I have to reconstruct it from scratch so it’s nearly live.)

Just finished this class, and it was great. We did what I'm going to call "calculus without calculus." #iTeachMath 1/4

The sum of the terms in a particular arithmetic sequence is 75. If you only sum EVERY OTHER term (starting at and ending on the same terms as before), you get 39. What is the sum of EVERY THIRD term (again, starting at and ending on the same terms)? #iTeachMath

What's the stupidest way you've hurt yourself? I was at a summer camp, and had to quickly run back to my cabin, down a long dirt road, much of it downhill, to get something I'd forgotten, and I also really, really, had to pee, and I thought that I could... uh... multitask. I could not.

I can't get over the title of this book. Yeah, SOCRATES, just tell them! 🙄

Meta-math problem: If I’m writing a radioactive decay problem, where at time 0 there was X amount and at time t1 there was Y amount, what intermediate time could I ask them to find the amount for where the answer would differ the most from that which you’d get if you assumed linearity? #iTeachMath

Because I've been using @hpicciotto.bsky.social's Lagging Homework model (which I love) in Alg II Honors, and we've come to the end of the year, I have a couple of "spare days." We spent the 1st one talking about my "2025 as a sum of consecutive positive integers" problem, which was... fine. But...

I have to say, sequence & sum problems are some of the funnest to create #iTeachMath

I think a lot of our students have been given the impression that all math problems are like sitcom episodes: Relatively simple, always resolving neatly within a reasonably short amount of time. So when they encounter a problem that doesn't fit that mold, they conclude that something must be wrong.

I love that the elevator in our school’s new building was donated by the Altman family

"You're asking me to go from point A to point B, why wouldn't I use a car to get there?" Yeah we've really lost the plot here. WHAT IS THE POINT OF SCHOOL? 1/3

Me whenever @davidkbutler.bsky.social breaks out #TryMathsLive

In how many ways can 2025 be written as a sum of two or more consecutive positive integers?

I spend an inordinate amount of time wondering when my 14yo twins will be old enough to appreciate Pulp Fiction

Awesome! This goes into my collection of, "Grow your math eyes as you learn to draw." The symmetries are so revealing here. I'll spell this out a bit more and pause for good "whys" along the way to make this more accessible to young kids. #iTeachMath
