"If you’re wondering what to do, the answer is: Show up. Speak out. Refuse to be cowed. This isn’t just about immigrants, or ICE, NYC, or LA. This is about are we going to let a dictator turn the greatest protest experiment in history into a cautionary tale." www.meidasplus.com/p/constituti...

NPR and the PBS series Frontline investigate the forces keeping communities from building resiliently, and the special interests that profit even when communities don't.

I do not approve of the recent change made by BlueSky that removes the blue notification symbol of updates to the currently selected feed.

The 2026 White House budget directs NASA to send humans to the Moon AND Mars with the smallest civil servant workforce since FY 1960...which began in the summer of 1959. Clearly, the outcome of a "cut first, justify later" approach. This is not a serious proposal (albeit very destructive).

"When conservatives destroy these public goods, it doesn’t necessarily lead to a Democratic backlash at the ballot box, and they see this as a long-term investment in a more ignorant population reliant on sources of information they can control — a docile population that can be easily manipulated."

Embracing Musk is, even for this iteration of the Democratic Party, a phenomenally stupid and self-defeating thing to do. Yes, the feud between him and Trump is good for them. Dems should help it continue—not by embracing Musk but by… letting it continue. https://trib.al/93jgxln

One argument I tried to make to centrist, right-leaning folks during 2024 was that if you really hate street protest and unrest and chaos, then you should absolutely not vote for Donald Trump, because he 100% guarantees more.

Each successive human civilisation ate the one before it, but all of them played a part in disfiguring, devouring and ultimately erasing the richest civilisation of them all: that of all the non-human species that were here first. open.substack.com/pub/georgets...

LAPD STATEMENT: “The protests remained peaceful… without incident…”

Tanks being moved into DC. National guard being mobilized in LA. Paramilitary thugs being unleashed across America. It's summer in America and fascism is in full bloom.

The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles — not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don't give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.

ICE terrorizes our communities. People protest, and now Trump is sending 2,000 National Guard troops into Los Angeles. This is how martial law begins in the so-called land of the free.

For those who missed it, I recommend this by @readfearn.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

And there you have it. ICE didn't target migrant workers in Kristi Noem's farms or Sarah Huckabee Sanders' meatpacking plants because they wanted to create a riot in LA as a pretext to declaring martial law. They don't care about undocumented migrants, they only care about controlling US citizens.

Right on cue

Extreme weather is wiping out amphibians Frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians are not just battling habitat loss and pollution they're now also contending with increasingly brutal heat waves and droughts and they are not surviving. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/202...

HAPPENING NOW: DOZENS of ICE agents seen gearing up for a night raid in LA Chinatown. This is how the U.S. treats immigrant communities. Like criminals. Like targets. Pull up to 721 Hill St. NOW. Document. Witness. DEFEND.

🚨NEW: @cbsnews.com reports ICE is arresting people who can't even legally be deported and holding them without enough food or water in a federal building BASEMENT in Los Angeles. Families dutifully attending check-ins with ICE are being arrested and held for days, forced to sleep on the floor.

"If we sit with this list a little longer, though, with attention to the history of the world we share, we can see a different unifying logic. All of these countries are in the global south, their citizens are racialized as Black or brown and Muslim. Most have high poverty rates."
