Looked up the author of the book series that this is all based on, Reiko Hikawa, and found that the specific book everything's drawing from, Grafton no Mittu no Ryusei, is floating around in various used formats, so uh, maybe I'll have that to puzzle over and perhaps practice Japanese with.

So I couldn't stop thinking about this and now have (with a bare minimum of effort) acquired a Laserdisc rip of it that included the promo trailer. Turns out it feels so much like Dirty Pair because both the character designer and the director worked on Dirty Pair.
