URGENT! Contact your senators today to advocate to fund science agencies and programs! The Senate Appropriations Committee & its subcommittees are writing appropriation bills for the federal FY26 budget now. Here's how you can help: esa.org/esablog/2025...

Chen et al. demonstrate that incorporating shape measures improves explanatory models for growth rates and demographic fates. Their findings reveal that colonies of the same species and size can exhibit different fates due to morphological variations. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

In a new Synthesis article, Walker & Gilbert provide a necessary framework and guide for empirical research on how allee effects structure ecological diversity. They counter a number of misconceptions about allee effects in modern coexistence theory. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

Even aquatic animal ecologists (like myself) stop to appreciate these Propeller flowers,or the purple pleatleaf. Strikingly beautiful flowers that apparently only last a a day!! 🧪

Today is the last day to oppose the gutting of the Endangered Species Act, I just did and it’s not hard:

Congratulations to the 2025 graduating class from #RiceUniversity! The adventure begins…

HAPPY 75th, NSF! We’re celebrating this milestone by highlighting some of NSF’s most transformative accomplishments—innovations that have shaped our world and continue to drive progress in health, technology, the environment, and beyond. Read on 🧵(1/11):

Ever noticed how being sick used to be fun as a kid (miss school and watch cartoons all day) but as a grown up it sucks (feeling crappy but still have to work)? Well, at least I get to work from home & hang out with his eminence (& handsome) ruler of the house.

And really nice press release by @reginafairbanks.bsky.social www.amnat.org/an/newpapers...

Really excited about this one since it is rooted in #NaturalHistory …”A New Twist on an Old Story: Pollination and Seed Predation in Jadera haematoloma”. Led by former PhD student, Dr. Matt Comerford in @asn-amnat.bsky.social. Funded by #NSF! www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1...

"Science is an investment. We will put forward a new 500 million package for 2025-2027 to support the best and the brightest researchers and scientists from Europe and around the world." — President @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu at the ‘Choose Europe for Science' event at La Sorbonne 🇫🇷

Thread with an email being sent to @asn-amnat.bsky.social @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social members today calling for a Tri-society week of action for NSF: Dear members: The tri-societies (ASN, SSE,SSB) are running a ‘Week of Action for NSF’. Your engagement is crucial.

Job opportunity! Excited to share that we have an opening for a research technician position to help with our research on phenological shifts & species interactions in amphibian communities. (please help spread the word!) More details here: emdz.fa.us2.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candid...

We're super excited to introduce a new article category for @asn-amnat.bsky.social: Inspiring perspectives. In a nutshell, we want these articles to spark lively scientific debates that will inspire future research directions in biology. More info here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....

I love these little junk bugs, also know as garbage or trash bugs, but that seems rude. They are larvae of lacewing and carry this heavy load for camouflage and protection. Clever bugs! 🧪

Why do birds of different feather flock together? Bharadwaj et al. discover novel patterns of inter-individual association in Himalayan mixed-species bird flocks, and highlight the importance of individual-level studies to understand MSF formation. Neat article about the maintenance of red & green colour morphs in pitcher plants. Martin-Eberhardt et al.

Laubach et al. discover that physiological constraints may contribute to the early-life disadvantage of slow growth, especially in the context of lower parental care, a result that aligns with the differential acquisition hypothesis. McDonald et al. find that courtship displays of the Golden-winged Manakin are dynamic interactions between audience and performer. Displays are simpler when a female is present, and simplest when her position on the display log indicates readiness to mate. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

Time cleanse! go enjoy the outside, maybe roll around a bit in some grass, like my dog…

Dragonfly exuviae have always some prehistoric vibe to them. Makes sense since they have been around long before dinosaurs.

Me too 😁

Kudos to all the excellent winners!!. I strongly encourage all the eligible PhD students out there to apply for the next round!

Congratulations to the @asn-amnat.bsky.social student research award recipients! I was blown away by the quality of proposals and choosing which ones to fund was hard. The passion and thoughtfulness of the student applicants gives me hope for the future. 🧪 #ecology #evolution

<Puts on @asn-amnat.bsky.social President's hat> It is my great pleasure to say that the American Society of Naturalists election results are in (and winners notified). Our future council will include: Jen Lau (President 2027) Martha Munoz (Vice President 2027) Stephen Proulx (Treasurer 2026-8)

Pursuant to a recent vote of the joint meeting of the ASN's Executive Committee and Diversity Committee, I am happy to report that the ASN / AmNat have deactivated our account on X. If you are following us here, you’ve come to the right place! :-)

What I love about working for my favorite journal is that @asn-amnat.bsky.social we get thank you letters from authors (including for rejections) & it makes my day every time! All thanks to our awesome team who do really care about the process & work hard!

I very much enjoyed the collaborative brainstorming on Temporal community structure at ETH Zürich. Big shout out to the best host ever (Janneke HRL) & her awesome group!!!

Our study of Golden-winged Manakins! Now typeset @asn-amnat.bsky.social We investigate courtship displays not as demonstrations of male traits, but rather as *interactions* between performers and audiences. doi.org/10.1086/734995

I missed European train rides… still the best way to travel!

For #salamandersaturday it’s one of my favorite, a little larvae of the mole salamander, Ambystoma talpoideum 😍🧪. Much prettier at that stage than at the adult stage. (Those are mm on scale bar, tiny dudes!)

Damselflies & dragonflies occupy a very special niche in the socio-ecological space: as insects & freshwater organisms they're representatives of underrepresented groups yet they are charismatic & we know more about them than about most other invertebrates! Therefore a very timely paper ⬇️ 🧪

Pleased to say that @asn-amnat.bsky.social The American Society of Naturalists (and its journal, The American Naturalist) are closing their X account down. If you aren't already following @asn-amnat.bsky.social for great science in evolution, ecology, and organismal biology, do so.

A waxbill with its red bill mottled black. This happens in breeding females, who mottle their red bill with juvenile-like black. Perhaps breeding females exploit others' innate responses towards juvenile bill colour. See the new article @asn-amnat.bsky.social here doi.org/10.1086/735832

Januario et al. found no correlation between sexual selection intensity & speciation rates or proxy traits. Because sexual selection intensity has high intraspecific variation and low phylogenetic signal, its macroevolutionary impacts are weak. Read now! www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

Tried something new this his #Weekendbaking: croissant sour dough loaf. It’s delicious so I get the hype… but then everything is better with butter…
