Thread on our interdisciplinary, grad DH fellow team's year of work, from their final presentation today:

Interested in hearing about the work going on at GC Digital Initiatives? You can livestream presentations from the Praxis class, Provost's Digital Innovation Grants, GC Digital Fellows, and more here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8X3...

One thing about me is that If I'm emceeing a Q&A and you are a former student of mine in the audience I will use that knowledge to (kindly) cold call you into the conversation.

@literaturegeek.bsky.social did a great job live posting about the Praxis fellows final presentation. This was a really special group, and they did fantastic work throughout the year cultivating a caring, thoughtful, intellectually rigorous community. We were lucky to learn from them.

Our grad DH Praxis Fellows are giving their final presentation for their work w/their interdisciplinary team + us @scholarslab.bsky.social over the past year. Cohort went from DH and blogging skeptics to strongly IDing + so much blogging: “It became a liberating space” 💜 Part of our research blog: +

Devastating news for the second Biden administration

@natmcgartland.bsky.social came to visit and immediately made me 30% cooler. #DHmakes

This semester, my students created a journal of literary and cultural analysis that will publish the writing of Cortland students and serve our broader community! (🧵1/3) sites.cortland.edu/emblaze/

This meeting could have been screamed into the abyss xox

Royal match ads are my Roman Empire. I wrote about them for Backlog. Continue to think these celebrities are being coerced into these ads. www.backlogmag.com/royal-match-...

the irritating and probably irresistible urge to deliver a talk on video art/essays as a video art essay

I was writing about students' transformational resistance of tech imposed on their lives in/for school and reread this article about the student-organized walkout in protest of the Summit Learning Platform. Students wrote a powerful letter to Zuckerberg, which is worth revisiting and teaching too 🧵

Just published: a blog post precursor to a digital project that I've been working on with my supervisor and another PhD student for over three years. We recreated Valve's ApertureScience site. The edition will publish with Scholarly Editing later this year. veilofcode.wordpress.com/2025/05/10/a...

New post up for Monday about a daily writing practice I developed last month. It's modeled on a newbie running program: I added sentences to my daily goal each week until I was doing about a paragraph each day. New post - "Couch to Paragraph Writing Program" walshbr.com/blog/couch-t...

We are seeking submissions on minimalist digital humanities pedagogy for our forthcoming issue! Deadline is June 15, CFP here: cuny.manifoldapp.org/read/jitp-ca...

Oh no Blue Prince is too fun

I wrote about how my fellowship at the @scholarslab.bsky.social made me realize that the field of Digital Humanities shares a lot of characteristics with The Real Housewives (or maybe my brain is just too full of our hackathon and reality TV) scholarslab.lib.virginia.edu/blog/dh-is-rh/

It’s really hard to take seriously any effort to normalize the parts of AI that might be useful when it’s being used as a cudgel by corrupt fascists to destroy art, science, healthcare, the indigent, and the macroeconomy. How can we accept the “good” parts of a system when we see what it’s used for?

All three events in this thread are hybrid or on zoom, so if you’ve ever wanted to see what we are up to now is your chance!

Join us for public Zooms of our final spring DH events, this Tues/Wed/Thurs: 5/13 our interdisciplinary grad DH Praxis Fellows team (incl. @machiavemmy.bsky.social on here!) reflects on their past year's text analysis project, digital pedagogy, & learning: cal.lib.virginia.edu/event/13997022; +

Every book published in the United States is sent to the Library of Congress. Also, if you are under 16 you cannot use the reading room or order books.

This thing will knock me on my ass for a week and I will still be first in line for it.

The cost of the 4 F-18 planes lost in the Red Sea ($240 million) is now greater than the 2025 NEH Budget ($200 million)

I was interviewed for this UVA student politics magazine piece on #zines for grassroots organizing & knowledge-sharing, by Amelia Lucien: "The Zine Revolution in the Age of the Internet": virginiapolitics.org/interviews/2...

Reading A Moveable Feast now and truly cackling at the introduction describing confusion as to why Hemingway didn’t like Ford Madox Ford. The chapter later on narrates Ford as a repulsive, lying toad. Sometimes you just don’t like someone’s vibes! Not everything need be intellectual.

CFP: Data Art! ✨Through 5/16, we're accepting proposals for creative work telling evocative, artistic, thought-provoking stories w/data for display in our community space. Craft, making, art, media & more methods are all options (hey, #DHmakes!). Funded; open to all (don't need to be at UVA; 18+) +

Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk has been released from an immigration detention center following a federal judge's order.

Welp it's happened. I just quoted Futurama in the book.

RIP Henry James you would have loved the story of an American from the Midwest who enters a world of European intrigue

Carla Hayden is an inspiration to so many in the library profession. People outside of that profession probably don't even realize how much. She certainly became an inspiration to me. She will be missed as our chief librarian.

I am going to lose my mind

Singular joy today telling people who are less online that there is a new pope

New Pope won't be revealed until Ewan McGregor parachutes into the Vatican and Tom Hanks rushes in wearing a bad wig.

Sam Altman thrilled to announce new AI Pope
