These are devastating times, and the people standing up for human dignity, from LA to the Madleen, are a beacon.

Chilling to see domestic police shooting clearly-identified journalists.

I had cause to interact with UCSF again today, and I came away feeling the same way I always do: they're incredible. I've never had a healthcare experience that's been as good. Not just in the US, where people seem to think healthcare is something only the privileged should have, but anywhere.

Hearing about solidarity protests elsewhere in the country. Is there a roundup somewhere?

My two year old just bounded into the living room and asked, "can you play the Dugga Doo song, Daddy?" Yes, child. You can.

What's happening in LA is absolutely chilling. It all just keeps escalating.

I enjoyed this and recommend it as an overview of the shortcomings both of "AI" as a technology and, in particular, of the vendors who are currently giving us the hard sell. I liked the recommendation that smaller, more ethically-trained models for specific problems may be part of the solution.

Today was the fourth anniversary of losing my mother. She was her own person, and the best person. I miss her every day. The world was infinitely better with her in it.

I am not an Elon Musk fan, but rhetoric about deporting him is really disturbing to me. He's a US citizen. Folks leaning towards authoritarianism want to strip people of their citizenships. We shouldn't want the same, even for the very worst of us. Either we have principles or we don't.

It's not about one protocol; it's about the open social web as a people-centered movement. Bounce lets you move from service to service, keeping your network in the process. #Fediverse www.theverge.com/news/678928/...

Just the coolest thing:

"Own your own home," they said. "Build equity, don't pay rent," they said. I mean, who *doesn't* love multiple random five figure repair costs so far this year?

Meanwhile, from the newsroom 👀 www.propublica.org/article/trum...

You might have reasonably assumed I was joking. I was not. I make no apologies for who I am. #doctorwho werd.io/2025/the-dar...

This is great work:

I'm not in very many group chats, but this seems like a good guide. also.roybahat.com/how-to-creat...

If you enjoyed my breakdowns of newsroom technology culture and open social web business models, you'll love my [checks notes] 3000 word detailed exploration of my fantasy season of Doctor Who

Heading into NYC once again. I will have all the Amtrak points. My superascendancy will be complete and the network shall be mine. Could use a coffee, though.

This was a really big deal and the team worked hard on it. It's really great that it's live and out in the world.

That's what I get for making a proprietary browser a core part of my workflow. Arc is brilliant and I truly love using it - but it's also a dead end. Back to Firefox I (very reluctantly) go. I hope they adopt some of its UX. #Technology browsercompany.substack.com/p/letter-to-...

If #DoctorWho really is canceled, I'd be up for a new season of New Adventures novels. I inhaled those things during the wilderness years - bonkers stories that could never have been filmed - and they did a good job of finding authors who became key players in bringing NuWho to life.

"We don't need more people writing software; we need more people who understand it. The vibes are insecure." In this issue of Human-Generated Content, we're doing a vibe check on vibe coding. There are some cases where it's useful, but, as we've learned, it can also be a security nightmare.

"What many see as the most dangerous assault on American democracy in the nation’s history [Curtis] Yarvin dismisses as woefully insufficient—a “vibes coup.”" What a pathetic little man. #Democracy www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

ICYMI: I wrote a guide to building a technology culture inside newsrooms. People seem to like it so far - but, as always, I'd love feedback. werd.io/2025/buildin...

Journalism treats technology like something that happens to it - like an asteroid. But newsrooms need to take control of their tech destiny. I wrote about how to build technology leadership and culture in newsrooms in order to preserve their own futures: werd.io/2025/buildin...

What characteristics do you think are important in a technology leader in a non-technical organization like a newsroom?

We're watching the new @msrachelforlittles.bsky.social potty episode as a family. (We're in the midst of potty training.) It is brilliant. Absolutely the modern Mr Rogers in so many important ways.
