The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) is cinematic opera. Its aesthetics are deliberate and aggressively artistically indulgent. The events are guided by pageantry, choreography and emotional spectacle rather than coherency and complexity. A triumph. A lost art. Humanity spits in the machine's eye.

There it folks! Tony Stella X Shout! OMG!

Here's the ultra-short read on the Mamdani logo design www.gq.com/story/zohran...

This whole "We can't commit to anything (Script, lighting, shot composition, animation, etc) because what if we want to change our minds later" culture is just terrible. And expensive! And hell on the workers!

I keep thinking about how the death knell for big budget filmmaking was, according to some VFX artists, the advent of CGI because CGI now lets a million executives meddle with a movie until the last possible moment.

FILM SCHOOL is still up for one more weekend at Giant Robot Gallery in LA! So much amazing work is in the show, you can see it all here, some pieces still available- www.giantrobot.com/collections/...

I’ve never forgotten this picture from 2016 and how it completely reshaped my understanding of how the media covers protests.

sure would be cool if the Art Directors Guild could do anything similar about the various PRODUCTION DESIGNERS, COSTUME DESIGNERS, and DIRECTORS using this shit

If 48,000 drivers receive speeding tickets in two months, the problem isn't too many speed enforcement cameras. It's too many speeding drivers.

Apollo & Rocky from Rocky III, in gouache for FILM SCHOOL, an upcoming group show at Giant Robot Gallery!

this is actually an old post from the other app, inspired by someone saying the M:I movies aren't imaginatively shot. I still disagree. the way Rob Hardy shot Fallout is so pretty & strange (all those the anamorphic lens flares!), it feels otherworldly - like a dream (or nightmare) Ethan is having

That’s the stuff.

Vincent Ward's Alien 3 (unproduced script, 1990): Spacewalk, art by Stephen Ellis With its wooden planet and space monks using medieval technology, this early version of the film would have been truly different from the previous ones.

really enjoying working with gouache lately, for a soon to-be-announced group show!

Happy birthday to Joe Johnston! He designed a lot of great ships, then directed Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), The Rocketeer (1991), Jumanji (1995), October Sky (1999), Jurassic Park III (2001), and Captain America (2011).

About 9 years ago (I remember that Obama was still president) Kurt Busiek & I did a rough mapping of a 3rd arc of Autumnlands. We brainstormed all kinds of cool stuff & we even completed 2 issues. They were in a flat file for most of the last decade. That’s long enough to sit on work so I’m sharing:

happy #maythe4th

May, as we all know, is @wesburt.bsky.social month.

Tony Gilroy’s inspiration for infighting revolutionaries in start of Andor season 2 were not Jacobins or Bolsheviks… It was his son and his niece’s husband being idiots arguing at a family dinner. He even cast them in the roles. www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

legit think that tiktok video coogler did on film formats sold millions worth of tickets

Two years ago I went on TV and said exactly this: The AI panic cycle was a marketing campaign by known billionaire failures, ultimately an excuse to revenge-fire workers with no immediate replacement. I literally said "The agita around AI is deeply cultural." Me no have TV job shortly thereafter.
