“[Trump] is making us afraid to stand up for our own rights because we’re then going to be sent to El Salvador"

There's a difference between performative outrage and passionate advocacy for human rights. Tony Bisignano delivers on the latter.

The “just asking questions” crowd are going to hate when they hear what the scientific method is

Analyzing data published on DOGE's own website, the Associated Press found that 40 percent of DOGE's "savings" have not saved the government anything. What a joke.

This week’s episode is McCutcheon v. FEC, where the Court held that aggregate limits on campaign donations are simply a bridge too far.

disturbing uptick in "we post tweets and talk about them." servile behavior tbh. bluesky is not the Greek chorus for the main character action of twitter, that's loser thinking, have some pride. twitter is dead. post bangers. thank you

This is why I keep talking about the last ten years as a metastasizing misinformation crisis. Why on EARTH would you think Trump would do anything thoughtfully or strategically? If the media is giving people this impression, it is lying to them

Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, is a 50+ year master of Russian diplomacy, strategy, and spycraft. Rubio, a politician. Had virtually no diplomatic training or experience. Cat, meet mouse.

i cannot stress enough that at the very least everyone in leadership needs to go. all of them. probably most electeds over 70 too. primary them all. while we're at it can we just drop the entirety of the ny dem party on a deserted island

What are Oregon Republican activists talking about in their Facebook groups on a Friday night, you might ask. Trump’s tariffs? Egg prices? Tax policy? Would you believe me if I said “The need for the FBI to look into Barack Obama’s birth certificate?”

"would you please put that in writing" is how you pull off insubordination without actually being insubordinate. Very useful when you are getting sketchy (whatever 'sketchy' might mean) instructions from someone who might not want to take responsibility for it later. signed, a former union steward.

Y'all are probably like, "why is he talking about the WI Supreme Court??" Because the world's most insufferable Nazi is weighing in on it and so is one of the far-right's best "get out the vote" people. Some background🧵 The '23 WI SC race was the most expensive judicial race in US history.

Slate [Feb 2] -- Purpose of Trump multiple Executive Orders is to "create Jim Crow for trans people" by "fully disenfranchising them from society on a scale not seen since Jim Crow" (e.g., the legal racial caste system mostly in South from Civil War to 1960s). [by @rikiwilchins.bsky.social‬]

i have a very bad feeling party leadership is looping back around to their favorite play when things go bad, asking the republicans nicely to solve the problem for them, and then maybe following up with sternly worded letters when they don’t

Yes. Former Treasury and OMB officials explained to me in detail what sort of power Elon Musk has now been granted. They described it as akin to having his hands on a series of spigots that he can now turn on and off: newrepublic.com/article/1910...

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

I'm keeping a running list of disappearing federal data in the 🧵 below. If there are others I missed let me know. crampell[at]washpost[dot]com or Signal username crampell.13

Man I wonder what they're gonna do with all the people theyre arresting to meet their quotas if other countries don't take them. might have to concentrate them all in some area, maybe a camp of some kind

This is my personal version of hell. Just so dystopian I can barely process it.

The things we are forced to manage through Gofundme as a human race are absurd — feeding people through a genocide as our taxes go to kill them, housing people through a fire as not enough of our taxes go to save them. All in the world’s richest country.

A former member of the Salem (Oregon) city council has started a new podcast on local politics that's really good. This episode, for example, does a deep dive into who funds the right wing Marion County Commissioners, landfills vs. trash incinerators, etc. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/m...

I am a climate scientist and this is correct ⬇️

Yeah John Fetterman going on Fox News and causally equating an arrest with “committing a crime” as if they’re interchangeable certainly portends a very bad next four years

Reminder that for the US welfare state, the point is not to relieve poverty but to best manage the specter of destitution as a means of disciplining the bottom rung of labor. Countless academics point out it's cheaper to simply house people but for the super rich, in the long run, it absolutely isnt

This is quite a report about Rep. Kay Granger, whose last vote was six months, ago, found to be living in memory care. The Dallas Express seems to have nailed it, despite no official confirmation from the congresswoman or her staff. dallasexpress.com/tarrant/excl...

A lot of people are freaking out about this but bird flu still doesn't appear to be spreading person-to-person. All of the human cases have had direct, prolonged exposure to animals. It's worth keeping an eye on, but it's not inevitably becoming the next pandemic.

There's so much angst and despair radiating all around us. This is wholly understandable, but if something's giving you warmth or strength (even just a bit), be sure to uplift that as well. Help others remember that kindness, solidarity, and care are still at work in the world.

Pope Francis is subtweeting Joe Biden, lol.

I did not know this many kids get married, jesus christ

I also promise to stop drinking if I am put in charge of the military

Drove through a small town in IA last weekend + overheard people saying they wouldn’t meet at a nearby town bc it has too many cops, and that all the cops were now sheriffs, AND that they’re all cowboy sheriffs in the state of Iowa. Not sure if that just means a cowboy had uniform or… something else
