Somebody’s got a case of the Monday’s

Yesterday I met someone at #GoogleCloudNext who used lots of OSS and opened bugs and issues as they found them, but didn’t know how to make that first commit. If that’s you, drop by the @golang.org & @flutter.dev Dev Hub booths from 12-3pm and I’ll walk you through a first commit (to any project)!

Are you at #GoogleCloudNext? Be sure to say hello to the Go team at our booth in the Developer Community Hub on the expo floor! We’ll be here all week to chat all things #golang.

This amazing jacket is ready for Vegas and all your open source questions! #GoogleCloudNext

Who else is watching Cuando Nadia Nos Ve/When No One Sees Us and cackled through the scene about the @eff.org sticker?

Replied to coworkers with a gopher pun of, "Golang swag just keeps popping up," and I think I better call it a day. I'm not going to top that.

@noupside.bsky.social amazing talk at Seattle U tonight; thank you! (From the Block Party section)

A pithy line I’ve found myself saying that you’re welcome to reuse and remix: Donating your project to an OSS foundation doesn’t reduce the work, it just moves the work. There may be very good reasons for moving! But someone still needs to do the work and that someone will be you.

I’m not sure I see the point in AI text summaries, but I do see the humor.

Diffie is taking his job as my Google Summer of Code review assistant very seriously. He was hoping to see more “cheese for good bois” in the project outcomes, but we’ve still got a couple hundred to go. There’s time.

#Postgres meets #GSoC! Like literally! #fosdem

The US Copyright Office has released Part 2 (of 3) of its study on Copyright and Generative AI. Part 2 is on the copyrightability of works created with AI tools. www.copyright.gov/ai/Copyright...

Remember those Pebble smart watches? Some people never forgot! Thrilled that Google open sourced the Pebble watch source code today so this enthusiast community can keep rolling. (Also Hacker News is happy?! That deserves cake.) opensource.googleblog.com/2025/01/see-...

Google’s #opensource program office is hiring! We’re looking for people who have experience working at the intersection of open source and business, and who enjoy working with engineering and product teams to get things done (We also enjoy OSS puns and animal memes) www.google.com/about/career...

Of course @mayakaczorowski.com already wrote something very thoughtful about this: mayakaczorowski.com/blogs/ai-age...

There's only one way to read, "The Dream of Hadoop is Alive in AI," and that's to the tune of, "The Dream of the 90s is Alive in Portland": redmonk.com/sogrady/2025... cc @sogrady.org

Applications are open for Google Summer of Code! If your #opensource project wants to host GSoC Mentees in 2025, now's the time to apply: opensource.googleblog.com/2025/01/goog... Need some inspiration? Check out this video about 20 years of Google Summer of Code: www.youtube.com/watch?v=93oj...

Be wary of fast & loose media coverage of the GAI copyright cases as they move through the courts. Neither MSFT nor Open AI has moved to dismiss direct infringement claims going to model training in the NY Times lawsuit. Fair use won't be argued on Tuesday. www.law360.com/ip/articles/...

Foundations aren’t valueless, but the false idea a project has to be in one to be “truly open” has spread across tech. The license + public development gives you all you need to have multiple parties work together. Yes 3rd party TM owners can be beneficial, but objective usage guidelines go far

My reward for the, “Don’t multi-task on stairs” lesson was a broken foot. Biathlon season is out, as is my favorite trip of the year to FOSDEM :( Only crutch crunches and trips to the couch allowed.
