24/5/25 Cumbria - Phwoar! The Sword-Leaved Helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia) is a seriously sexy plant, and I reckon our Northern populations are the best examples of this awesome #orchid, as well as the finest #orchids I have seen so far this year #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Purples on the shingle at Landguard, Felixstowe yesterday. Hound's-tongue Cynoglossum officinale, Viper's-bugloss Echium vulgare, Wild Clary Salvia verbeneca. @bsbibotany.bsky.social

The area with Bee Orchids that I spotted back in February and contacted the council about has been roped off to allow them a chance to flower. A quick count reveals a minimum of 129 spikes that look like they'll flower in the next couple of weeks.

Bookings are open for #BSBISummerMeeting 2025 in Melrose, Scotland! Unsure if this event is right for you? So was @mandyforde.bsky.social but she took the plunge last year & here's her story: bsbipublicity.blogspot.com/2025/05/bsbi... This year's programme: www.tickettailor.com/events/botan...

Very scarce and exceptionally beautiful... Sea Pea at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve today. They blow me away, every year. 💜 @sussexwildlife.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social #UKwildlife

Very early for #WildflowerHour: a Corncockle as a #PavementPlant on our drive

Anyone who knows us well will know that this is our favourite #WildflowerHour challenge of the year! We love #orchids here at Mariposa. And we can't wait to see your finds this Sunday evening in this week's #OrchidChallenge. There's treasure to be found out there, right now.

It’s a bit late or very early for #WildFlowerHour but this is Ivy broomrape photographed in the place I always find it on the Exe estuary.

A successful early Spring visit to the Upper levels of Cwm Idwal, where I managed to find both Purple 'Mountain Saxifrage, Saxifraga oppositifolia, plus the basal rosette of Butterwort Pinguicula vulgaris in a nearby Sphagnum Bog! @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

@ukorchids.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bsbiscotland.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social A goodly number of these early marsh-orchids in sand dunes at the south end of #Shetland #WildflowerHour #Scotland

Some Northern Marsh Orchid types in my lawn... #Northumberland #Wildflowerhour

So looking forward to this! It looks amazing!!!!!

It’s that time of year when social media just seems to be full of gorgeous orchid pics! The challenge this week is to see if you can find one! Share your orchidaceous finds for #WildflowerHour this Sunday 8-9pm using the hashtag #OrchidChallenge. 📸 William Keble Martin

I managed to find just two Heath Spotted Orchids Near Coverack, Cornwall today. There's only one record for this monad for it, and that was from 1979 and it's not seen since, so a nice find. Hiding under bracken. Dactylorhiza maculata subsp ericetorum #wildflowerhour

Dewberry* *99.9% sure, but it's a Rubus, and there's lots, and most are difficult. I think this is one of the easier ones. But then a Bramble expert may be lurking to correct me and tell me it's something different. #WildflowerHour

Some #Speyside finds for #Wildflowerhour. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbiscotland.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social #Moray #VC95

Guelder rose flower. Makes me think of lemon tarts with whipped cream swirls around the edge 😋. #WildFlowerHour #WildFlowerShow

Burnet Rose, Rosa spinosissima #WildflowerShow for #WildflowerHour Redhills Pasture, #Arnside Knott #Cumbria

Yellow pimpernel from yesterday's Norfolk Flora group meeting @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

Bugle on a roadside verge North Kildare. #wildflowerhour

Cow parsley I believe at The Sportsman Seasalter Kent UK. Wee bit late for @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

#Wildflowershow Competely unexpected when all others are struggling in Warwickshire. This Southern Marsh orchid volunteered @bcwarwickshire.bsky.social Ryton meadows reserve.in time for the open day. #openflower @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

I think this is Ivy Broomrape on the coast in Portland on the ivy-clad cliffs. Can anyone confirm please? Thanks 🙏 @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @naturelark.bsky.social @astridbiddle.bsky.social

Sorrel along a right of way, Yorkshire #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

I missed #WildflowerHour yesterday evening but here are some contributions from a trip to #Cornwall over the last few days 🌼

Large patches of Woodruff Galium odoratum during our Norfolk Flora Group outing yesterday. @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

Cowberry, Cannock Chase #wildflowerhour

Twelve plant lifers at Brean, not including a hairgrass Koeleria sp. and an eyebright Euphrasia sp. (which I really wanted to be K.vallesiana and E.tetraquetra respectively but can’t honestly claim). Best though has to be my first ever broomrape - Ivy Broomrape, weird as expected! #wildflowerhour

Woodruff from yesterday's Norfolk Flora group meeting @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

Oops nearly forgot! Dog rose (rosa canina) for #WildFlowerHour Looking brighter for recent showers washing the dust from the lane away.

#wildflowerhour #Cumbria

My goodness what an amazing #wildflowerhour tonight! So many beautiful finds shared this evening, nature really does make the very best floral displays & #WildFlowerShow! After some much needed rain at last, let’s meet again next Sunday to see what’s in flower……!

Bedfordshire Burnt #orchids for this week's #WildflowerHour challenge - #WildFlowerShow 🙂 They're quite a lot smaller than last year, probably because it's been so dry. Still absolutely stunning, though! @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

Almost Allium like! Common hogweed along a lane #wildflowershow #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

#WildFlowerShow for #WildflowerHour there's nothing quitelike the deep rich red colour of a patch of Yorkshire Fog grass when it is first coming out, just before the flower opens:

Beautiful #WildflowerShow of Red Campion, Cow Parsley and Hogweed on an uncut verge, Leicestershire. #wildflowerhour

Hedge mustard, Horse radish, White dead nettle and Beaked hawksbeard. #WildFlowerShow #WildflowerHour

For #wildflowershow for #wildflowerhour this is a Carmarthenshire meadow with Whorled Caraway, Southern Marsh Orchid, Yellow-rattle, Eyebright, Cat’s-ear, Rough Hawkbit and much more….. not that the photo does it any justice whatsoever!

A #WildflowerHour #WildFlowerShow garden would not be complete without a water feature so here it is, a forest of Water Violet in a Lincolnshire Dike.

Very pretty Sea Milkwort by the coast ,co.down this week #wildflowerhour #wildflowershow @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Last one for this evening ‐ Suffolk Military #orchids #WildflowerHour #WildFlowerShow I would have loved to have seen Rex Graham's face when he discovered them 70 years ago! @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

Dwarf Mallow, Malva neglecta, putting on a great show on a local pavement. #WildFlowerShow #WildflowerHour

#WildFlowerShow from #NorthWales this weekend. Just **WOW** Sea thrift, common spotted orchid, sanacle, eyebright, hounds tongue, scabious with bonus silver studded blue, pyramidal orchid, mallow & bee orchids. Amazing given the dry conditions. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social

For the #WildFlowerShow my Sea Kale (Crambe maritima) is giving it’s most spectacular display ever. It’s my number one native plant for the garden: large metallic-blue sculptural leaves & huge heads of honey-scented flowers. I just love it (volume up for the birdsong backing track) #WildflowerHour

One from the archives (2021) but this combination of Weld, Viper's-bugloss and Hemlock is one of the most memorable examples of a #WildFlowerShow that I've ever seen. No garden designer could better it... #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

For the #WildflowerHour challenge this week - #WildFlowerShow, here is a selection of this season's #orchids, mainly from Cambs. and neighbouring counties. Still more to come... 🙂 Names in ALT text. @wildflowerhour.bsky.social @bsbibotany.bsky.social @ukorchids.bsky.social

Hawthorn are amazing this year, though nearing the end of flowering (perfect small trees for every garden too) #wildflowershow @wildflowerhour.bsky.social

The Columbines are putting on a spectacular #WildFlowerShow at Bedford Purlieus NNR, one of their truly native sites. Not quite as good as in 1884 when Rev Berkeley reported that after coppicing the 'whole land is sometimes blue with ...Columbine'. #wildflowerhour @bsbibotany.bsky.social

I think we reached peak Buttercup in Cambridge this week. #WildFlowerShow #WildflowerHour

Pink Purslane & Buttercups... #WildFlowerShow for this week's #wildflowerhour
