Congrats - amazing work show a beautiful landscape of opioid receptor conformations by EM

This is disappointing. To understand the significance of this area for Natives, listen to this Native American Calling episode with Natives in the area describing their relationship with this land. www.nativeamericacalling.com/tuesday-may-...

I’m super honored to be selected, and immensely grateful. Huge thanks, @hypothesisfund.bsky.social! We are looking forward to doing some fun science! bsky.app/profile/hypo...

Come and join us! We’re hiring a new Group Leader in Generative Biology at the @sangerinstitute.bsky.social Building AI models or the data to train them? Core funding of >$130M a year for a faculty of ~30. www.nature.com/naturecareer... acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:... pls RT!

Not the wurst case science bluesky scenario: This post inspired me to look up a few other papers by the 'brilliant hoot' Fred Menger and led me to this absolute beauty! 🧪 Certainly NO ONE should feel pity for the mundane phospholipid and its inferiority complex as a "sausage casing" 🌭😂 #LipidLove

I’m no longer an assistant to the professor. It’s been a long journey to associate professor. I now join the 0.4% of tenured Native American/Alaska Native (AI/AN) faculty! In 2019, there were 50 tenure AI/AN in the sciences. This number still needs to increase! #NativesInSTEM

This was the last @hhmi.org conference Lilly and Yuh-Nung Jan attended as investigators. They're becoming HHMI emeritus but still run a thriving NIH-funded lab. From cloning the first potassium ion channel (Shaker) to decoding neuronal development, the Jans have made a huge impact.

Wrapping up my time at the Full Circle of Native and Indigenous Scientists in Biology Symposium and I want to reflect on some thoughts mentioned today qbi.ucsf.edu/full-circle-... 1/5

The #FullCircleSympisium is done and my heart is full. I want to thank ASSISTANT PROFESSOR @willowcoyote.bsky.social for organizing, along with his crew of students, administrators, and others who helped this run smoothly and even on time. I even called my dad after to tell him how awesome it was.

I am full of thanks to the Full Circle Symposium and @willowcoyote.bsky.social for creating a scientific space for futuristic and forward-thinking minds. It was a great way to reconnect. Also, thanks to @cheadlelab.bsky.social who snapped this picture:

I am at the Full Circle Symposium organized by @willowcoyote.bsky.social this week and I have so many thoughts. 🧵 #FullCircleSymposium qbi.ucsf.edu/full-circle-...

🌠 We're thrilled to announce our latest Hypothesis Fund awardees and their groundbreaking projects! From optimizing enzymes, to protein sequencing, and membrane 'functional hotspots', each of these projects holds the potential to be broadly transformative for science! 1/ 🧵

Looking forward to visiting UCSF this week for this symposium!

Just a little over a week out! The symposium is coming together wonderfully. Please join us either in person at UCSF or virtually in a webinar! Register here :) qbi.ucsf.edu/full-circle-...

Honored and grateful to receive the 2025 Bowes Biomedical Investigator Award - along with my friend, colleague and collaborator @annamolofskylab.bsky.social 😊🎉🎉🎉 www.ucsf.edu/news/2025/02...

In this time of chaos - something good! We are excited to share our final (or near final) speaker list for the 3rd UCSF Full Circle Symposium 4/3-4/4 to highlight Native biologists! Please share the word and register to attend the webinar in person! More info: qbi.ucsf.edu/full-circle-...

As did I - my undergrad institution, Evergreen State College, while opening my eyes to research did not have resources or opportunities for research. I was lucky to a land an reu in 2013 doing oceanography and fell in love with research. Breaks my heart that there will be fewer opportunities.

We should perhaps consider doing the same on all the university science buildings

Recursion CEO Chris Gibson: Publicly funded research built the biopharma industry. Now it needs our help. Companies with resources must bridge the gap. 👏 $RXRX via @statnews.com www.statnews.com/2025/02/19/n...

A thread. Things are bad. But we’ve already lost if they smother the passion & joy we have for science. So here’s a proposal: if you’re a biologist in any way impacted by *exasperated wave* & want to chat, drop me an e-mail at myfirst.mylast[at]ucsf.edu. Let’s schedule a 30min chat about [...] (1/n)

Flooding BlueSky with good news today. Neal lab received a NoA! Grateful our NIH R35 MIRA renewal is funded to support our ongoing work on membrane protein quality! 🙏🙏

One more sleep to the @biophysicalsoc.bsky.social CRT Symposium on tomorrow morning bright and early! Join us in Petree Hall C at 8.30am.

Really exciting to be talking at this tomorrow. If you are at bps stop by for what will be an awesome Saturday morning session!

Neuroscientist Tomasz Nowakowski, PhD, is leading a collaborative CIRM-funded project using stem cell technologies & #AI to uncover how genetic mutations associated with schizophrenia impact brain development. #Neuroskyence @ucsfstemcell.bsky.social @uclastemcell.bsky.social @aliceyting.bsky.social

Yeah, my Niners have been out of the picture for a long time. But do I give up hope for their future? No way. They will retool, from coaching on down, and rebuild the passion to succeed on the field. Gotta represent, let’s go!! And yes, this is a cheesy segue to the dire threat on academia… 🧵

Are you an HHMI-funded researcher affected by the cancellation today of IC3 (Inclusive Excellence 3)? Find me at [email protected] or on Signal: meredithwadman.13

Woah!

We will host the 3rd Full Circle Symposium for Native Biologists at UCSF on April 3-4! We aim to build community and provide opportunities for Native scientists. If you are a Native biologist at any training stage who wants to speak, please fill this out by this Friday (1/31): tinyurl.com/mm2tswt7

Amid concerning times, sharing a bit of positivity: our 1st preprint of 2025 (funded VIA NIH COMMON FUND), heroically led by Marty Yang (@martyyang.bsky.social) w/ huge assist from @genophoria.bsky.social lab. Lots to cover so let’s get this tweetorial started (1/n)! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Check out impressive study by @indigenerd.bsky.social! They find psychedelics induce drastic long lasting alternative splicing in neurons!

www.cell.com/cell/abstrac... this is amazing!

The hotel minibar matches the topic of the thesis ("The impact of amino acid insertions and deletions on protein stability and function")

What an amazing group of scientists! Congratulations and welcome to the community, looking forward to meeting you all

Welcome to all the 2024 Hanna Gray fellows! I am so excited to meet all of you and learn about your brilliant scientific trajectories! This community and award accelerated my career dramatically. I can't wait to see all of your amazing future research achievements!

Excited to present our lab's new work on GPCR antagonism: Contrary to popular belief, we propose that inverse agonists can bind to and act via GPCR:G protein complexes. We show this at KOR, through cellular assays, radioligand binding and cryoEM studies. A thread. 💊 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
