Tonight's film

The first and last film I had an annoying crowd with in the cinema was Frank (2014). I have been going to the cinema basically weekly since 2000. I have no idea how everyone else stumbles into terrible cinema experiences with talking, phones, and whatever else.

I found myself surprisingly moved at the end of this. A tough western. A wagon train film in the mould of Lonesome Dove, where every new scene is a new horror. A western about women, led by Robert Taylor. It would make a hell of a good double bill with Meek's Cutoff.

A really sweet and funny film.

Ah, I didn't like My Favourite Year as much as I thought I was going to. Peter O'Toole is wonderful; everything else less so.

I've watched one episode of Dept. Q. Every scene is a succession of people calling each other "fucking pricks" in rather gothic looking streets, which would seem ridiculous, except it is set in Edinburgh and that seems about right.

This is basically a perfect top ten - except I love her in Manhattan Murder Mystery so much that I would have sneaked that in.

Well, that was absolutely wonderful. Colman is as superb as advertised. A great Dickens adaptation, full of spirit, comedy, and humanity. The storming of the Bastille sequence is utterly remarkable.

Tonight's film (Ronald Colman is probably the most famous Hollywood actor, where I have seen the least amount of films. I think the only Colman film I've seen is Lost Horizon.)

Went into the office today and ended up buying 4 Third Windows Films blurays at lunchtime. Bought one for every meeting I managed not to lose my cool in during the morning. Might have to pick up another 3 on my way home.

What a remarkable film. I'm not sure the flash-forward meta scenes work, but everything else is stunning. The luminous Maggie Cheung gives one of the great performances, and Carina Lau isn't far behind her. Stanley Kwan made some great, great films.

No Country for Old Melons is on PrimeVideo. A great Charles Bronson film.
