Doug Walker is a sisyphean figure

One more reason I hate AI is that scrapers are slowing down websites to the point where some don't even load. These are small, expert-created websites that don't have a budget to handle all this. It's like a parasitic infection.

Who is going to want to risk their neck getting into one, is the other thing

they serve Moloch, the lord of suffering, and it is their holy task to increase the quantity of pain and death in this world

we have commodified everything. games, movies, everything. its all formulas and tests and feedback. with its history and art design, marathon should have been a singleplayer shooter, or at least shipped with a singleplayer campaign. but those numbers wouldn't stack up the way executives want.

Yeah they aren’t antiwar, they’re anti wars that imperil the Christian Ethnonationalist hegemony they crave. (With a bunch of antisemitic ideas about Israel mixed in.) Doesn’t mean they aren’t right in this case. But we should be clear where they’re coming from and what their end goals are.

Everyone is throwing out examples of Iraq War-era mass derangement so I might as well throw in Amanda Bynes doing a peace sign on a movie poster being photoshopped out for fear of being seen as an antiwar statement

We've been kind of slammed @404media.co recently, but thought we would take a minute to reflect on the impact of some of our bigger stories recently. We believe that reporting from a small team can make tangible change and that you don't have to be part of a big organization to do investigative work

Always makes me happy when I can hear my fiancé opening a soda from the other room ☺️

Can’t believe I had to Hearn verification on a microblogging website twice in my god damn life

wow I asked it if it's becoming conscious this is scary

I feel like I deserve a verification for founding and operating Bluesky’s first home grown literary and culture magazine

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I don't know how much clearer they can be about "we want you to get sick and die"

I'd also remind everyone that you can't always tell the difference from posts alone between a shut-in slacktivist and someone who is actually doing stuff and not really talking about it

The subway is a miracle and you either learn to accept that you live in a society with its other users or you live life as God’s most despised pussy

There are no longer ‘military targets’ in Palestine every Palestinian is a target. We are killed simply for existing, for opening our eyes in the morning, for daring to dream, to love, to play. No one is spared from the killing machine: the athlete, the child, the doctor, the student.

These people aren’t afraid Mamdani would be a bad mayor. We have a ridiculous, corrupt, incompetent mayor right now and the city is hanging in OK. They’re declaring all-out war because they’re afraid Mamdani (or Lander) might be a good mayor.

a trans person has never negatively impacted my life. politicians and billionaires sure have

I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions but we really should wait for a detailed report from our non-existent environment, labor, and public safety regulators

Nice post you got there. Be a real shame if someone...didn't read half of it

grateful to once again be having a conversation about the bullying tactics of trans activists

That MIT study should be the death knell of every "pivot to AI" strategy in education. That MIT study should land immediately on the desk of every administrator that imposed AI upon their institution. Yes, I am talking about my employer, the California State University system.

In the basement of LAX:

THERAPIST: you seem to interpret real life as if you're streaming, and can only process emotions through a discussion with some sort of non-existent group viewing your every action ME: Chat am I cooked

Incredible slip

Just know that once this happens (shiddd it’s probably already happening) companies will be able to have influence on what information you receive from ChatGPT, there’s already no regulation on what it feeds you, you could be getting nothing but propaganda and advertisements in every response

Painting: Red House (end of terrace)

By the 1900s, the movie industry had a problem: supply could not meet demand. DAVY JONES' LOCKER (1900) is a Biograph release that printed footage of a skeleton marionette over an actuality shot of a shipwreck, creating a surreal scene, and stretching existing material into new entertainment.

This is shocking. Pure totalitarianism from DHS, and also blatantly unconstitutional. www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

Imagine the NYC takes if social media had been a thing in the 70s-80s...

"Those conversations are unfolding largely outside of the professional advocacy world" — Great, so we're all on the same page that "trans activists" means random people on social media.

the main difference between the bush administration and this one is that the neoconservative ideologues have been replaced with people who want to see explosions on the tv

Just a reminder that generative AI is theft of labor and intellectual property, uses vast amounts of energy/ water, provides at best mediocre results (if not outright lies or misinformation), actually affects your ability to think over time (mind duh), and is in general a really fucking bad idea.

Will share this here now: due to some budget struggles at ISD, my position there is getting phased out. I’ll be on the hunt for full time work again come July. Not sure what the future will hold for me in the short-term, but please keep me in mind if you see decent openings and/or freelance work.

Vienna has created public spaces all over the nicest parts of the city, investing in free infrastructure. In the U.S., these places would be privatized or commercialized. Such a visible difference in approach to community and equality.

*endless screaming*

I think that "chatbot" is a bad design paradigm for most problems. It's actually the refusal to to design work.

'Meredith,' some guys ask, 'why won't you shove AI into Signal?' Because we love privacy, and we love you, and this shit is predictable and unacceptable. Use Signal ❤️

i don't think most cis people know what it's like for every fun or happy or meaningful moment you experience to be overshadowed by some tragedy affecting your fundamental personhood in some way within 48 hours on either side of it

Fascinating. Sleep is cultural. nautil.us/sleep-has-no...

'ChatGPT users had the lowest brain engagement and “consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels.”...ChatGPT users got lazier with each subsequent essay, often resorting to copy-and-paste by the end of the study.' time.com/7295195/ai-c...

I wish people would listen to people who write & teach writing for a living. We know that there is something *extremely important* contained within the process of writing. Writing, editing, revising, getting feedback, sitting with your thoughts, changing your thoughts. Writing IS thinking.

I love you all very much and I’m so sorry this is the world we live in. Goodnight!

My fiancé doesn’t like whipped cream (insanity)
