What happened today is what happens under fascism. By comparison, David Frum explains what happens in a democracy.

I'm just naturally going to gravitate towards the places where I receive the fewest rape threats and I really haven't thought about it much beyond that

Good morning friends. This kid is spot on 👏🏼💙

Buyin' in....

@hcrichardson.bsky.social 💡 Assignment editors at local TV stations are very responsive to viewers' suggestions. People can call the stations the night before and ask who will be covering the marches/rallies. Let them know you expect them there. Local coverage often leads to national coverage.

Stephen Miller and U.S. Homeland Security amplify an image from white Christian nationalist CJay Engel -- who has been the subject of my investigations since he and his allies began their move into Jackson County, TN. 1/x

Greetings! I’m at the DoubleTree Hotel in Whittier, CA (in Los Angeles county). Protesters against federal detention raids say that officials have been staying here though I have not independently confirmed. Hundreds outside, chanting “kick them out.” It is EXTREMELY loud.

It’s completely insane that US troops are illegally deployed to suppress domestic opposition and it’s not uniformly condemned by the press and political elite.

People keep wanting to find Democratic Joe Rogan but honestly just fund a national paper that's not petrified to tell the truth at this point. You could spin that up next week and be making money by August.

I'm not sure why the President Trump is boasting that he's charging Americans a 5.5 times higher tax rate than President Xi is charging the Chinese people.

President Trump’s federal agents are now chasing migrant farm workers through fields — and circling them with a CBP chopper normally used to track smuggling at the border — in the heart of the nation’s agricultural economy. here’s my report from Ventura County, California.

Pope Leo’s first US episcopal appointment, San Diego’s Bishop-designate Pham, a Vietnamese refugee, invites priests and faith leaders to “stand in solidarity”with migrants at courthouse on June 20, as they make court appearances.

Met an active duty member of the military yesterday who filed conscientious objector paperwork in response to deployment of military on U.S. soil. Was told multiple Army have filed, unknown quantities in other branches.

Peaceful protest against ICE in Spokane is happening at 411 W Cataldo after the detainment of a young man who went to his hearing. Over a dozen protestors are sitting in front of the bus , prepared to be arrested. The bus windshield has been spray painted

This is a real thing being posted and circulated by the Department of Homeland Security, referring to undocumented immigrants as “foreign invaders” and urging good Americans to turn them in. (I’ll leave it to BlueSky historians to find comparisons to WWII era materials.)

Money is more important than anything else, including good customer experience and product quality, for the people buying up businesses and wrecking them. This is a must-read essay and interview.

A huge part of stopping or reversing oppression is power plays by actors in the system who are more susceptible to public pressure and opinion. I wish it were due purely to moral awakenings, but more mercenary impulses often play a role, too. And knowing that can be useful.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

maybe i've just missed it but the implications of the president vowing to use "very big force" against protest of any kind at his birthday military parade seems like it's flying under the radar a bit? like there's no pretext that it's about violence, it's just a threat against critical speech

I hear calls for “civility” I believe that many of us are mistaking docility for civility

Reminder: Antifa is not a thing.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

Protests work. Always have, always will.

"Trump declares intention to openly break Congressionally-enacted valid law in order to honor white supremacy." Sums it all up. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/10/u...

From ATLScoop, things seem to be getting a bit out of control outside of Atlanta at an immigration enforcement protest.

Here's the full Newsom address. It's great. (99% anyway, it's a tiny quibble but can we please stop reflexively adding "hard working" as the sole acceptable preceding adjective for immigrants) www.youtube.com/live/0n77NFj...

We’ve leapt over a lot of red lines in the last week. But one I find most worrying is Trump/MAGA/ICE have ceased even pretending to claim some criminal pretext for cracking down on protected speech. It’s just straight up “if you criticize us, you’re getting throttled/arrested/disappeared.”

that’s right ❌👑

This headline would have had fit in just the same space: Calls for Restraint in L.A. After Police Shootings Injure Journalists

Threats to use surveillance to punish people exercising their First Amendment rights are fundamentally antidemocratic and raise serious constitutional concerns. We will not let law enforcement intimidate us into silence.

All, I'm thinking of the Asian grandparents who like to hang out in these shopping complexes where 99 Ranch Markets are - like mine did, when they were alive - and I can't even begin to express how angry I am right now. And this is why we have to keep fighting.

It is 100% carrying water for the opposition to participate in this collective delusion that Dems for some reason need to answer for every teen who throws a rock rather than hold the Trump admin accountable for intentionally creating chaos and breaking the law to stoke violence. They are in charge.

A total outrage. A judge needs to dismiss this at the first opportunity. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Not true. I see you're a luxury watch dealer. I'm also interested in watches. Let me show you how free and easy migration has allowed you to earn a living. 🧵

the strongest force on earth is class solidarity

This is why many of us on the academic side said that if troops get deployed in to blue cities, they will be used for anything The federal government wants them to do no matter what and they will never leave once stationed in a blue city, it’s an occupation of what they see as enemy territory.

Question. Did democracy cease to function during the Whiskey Rebellion? The Great Railroad Strike of 1877? The May Day Riots? Let me put this another way, can you identify a single point in U.S. history where Americans exclusively expressed themselves in an orderly fashion along acceptable lines?

Trump is mobilizing 5000 military personnel in LA for at best a few thousand protesters. If a true uprising were to occur with tens of thousands protesters, there's no way they could contain it. They would need 100,000 troops to hold LA alone.

This is 100% the fault of ICE and the Trump admin, which has deliberately incentivized this behavior with their tactics. Their goal is to encourage white nationalist groups to dress up as ICE to attack minorities, and the increase in lookalike crimes is to them an acceptable byproduct.

Right now, Dems are hiding in their offices, scrolling their phones fearfully, wondering "how are voters going to feel about the National Guard being deployed?" The right, meanwhile, is vigorously *attempting to shape* how voters feel about it, filling every medium with coordinated propaganda.

I was a medic at the Santa Ana protests in OC today. I watched police fire tear gas, flash bangs, & rubber bullets into crowds of men, women, & children. Other medics and I were clearly marked with red crosses, and the police were targeting us. One of the most fucked up things I’ve ever seen.
