Absolutely thrilled to announce the launch of ARTIC2 - a £5.5M 5 year project funded by @wellcometrust.bsky.social to build on the ARTIC approach of low-cost, globally accessible genome sequencing for surveillance of outbreaks, epidemics and endemic diseases: www.birmingham.ac.uk/news/2025/am...

I had only gotten through my first YouTube tutorial on how to sew sneakers! How do you plan?

MMR vaccine doesn’t just prevent measles, mumps, and rubella. It also prevents RFK Jr. from showing up at your child’s funeral to exploit your grief at your most vulnerable moment.

@JH WY Hands Off today

Every person on Bluesky should know: * Every post on Bluesky is PUBLIC forever * Every post on Bluesky is archived by ICE, NSA, and many other agencies * Even if you delete a post, it’s already been captured * Judges don’t care if you were “kidding” or being ironic www.404media.co/the-200-site...

Looks like we've got a cure for sickle cell. www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news...

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025. This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

Reading an internal NIH guidance memo which basically says since we’re probably going to be shutting down labs with little or no notice just be sure to remember about the whole disposing of biohazard materials the right way thing. ☣️ 😬🤡

It’s a sad day. #ElbowsUp

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world. www.science.org/content/arti...

It's because it has "trans" in it, right? But Grok knows best and I'm sure a department focused on better customer service by the SSA is such a waste. /s

Entire government agencies are being reshaped, career experts are leaving and power is shifting — often behind closed doors. ProPublica is investigating. 🧵⬇️ (1/6)

@alt-irs.bsky.social a good list here of extra employment docs etc for everyone to be saving etc while there’s still time… sigh

So... thoughts on the security of any bank accounts linked to previous IRS payments or refunds? Time to get new accounts?

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

For those not familiar with how financial markets work, US Treasuries are the ultimate safe asset, used as collateral for everything. Even a hint that some Treasuries might not be honored could bring everything to a screeching halt 1/

The American Bar Association has just called upon every attorney, regardless of their political views, to join them & stand up for the rule of law & at minimum insist that our government "follow the law." Every lawyer has an ethical responsibility to do so. www.americanbar.org/news/abanews...

My kid has narrowed her college choices down to two. Both are great schools but one is in a deep red state and the other is in California. She thinks I'm joking about having plans to evacuate her when it becomes necessary if she chooses the one in the red state.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.

If you're struggling financially due to government fuckery or for any reason really and you need infant formula talk to your pediatrician we can hook you up and don't like to ask questions.

Don't forget to stretch.

Wyoming Health Committee chairwoman Rachel Rodriguez-Williams cited the high volume of speakers for her decision to prevent lawmakers from engaging with non-agency experts and doctors during their testimony about three new abortion restriction bills.

boy are we crying out for some kind of rabble-rousing populist in a prominent position

As a father of five kids, I totally agree with this evergreen post.

So let’s see, Trump has been President for a week and now we are fighting with Canada, Greenland, Mexico, Denmark, Panama, Colombia, and pretty much the entire EU. It does seem that Viktor Orban and Netanyahu now likes us more though, so there’s that.

Let me give a concrete example of the importance of applications with high risk-high reward as well as the role of NIH staff in taking risks. Decades ago, a physical chemist proposed ideas about doing mass spectrometry on proteins (when this was deemed probably impossible). 1/n

Techbros: "Soon machines will do all the jobs and we shall dismantle the welfare system!" People: "But how shall people live?" Techbros: "Let them eat cAik."

Resist.

A week ago I was being told to apologize for saying Trump would be worse for Gaza because he faked a temporary pause/pretend ceasefire to coincide with his inauguration. Now he’s just openly endorsing/encouraging ethnic cleansing.

This isn't just an attack on scientific research. It's an attack on *scientists.* Central to Trump's "Revolution of Common Sense" is the idea that scientists impede progress in pursuit of political goals. This move -- Telegraphed in Project 2025 -- upends life for those who depend on NIH funding.
