Sometimes, when I’m able to recommend a book that really suits someone’s need or when I connect deeply with someone over a book, I think to myself, “This is why I read.”

Deuteronomy 3. All that Moses beheld of Yahweh’s power, and He was just getting started.

Our “walk with God” includes, but is not restricted to, our “quiet times.”

This morning in Kelly Kapic’s 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘰 𝘐𝘵 𝘈𝘭𝘭:

“Products are compelling and profitable when the technological affordance meets a human vulnerability.” -Sherry Turkle podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/y...

“While it may sound strange to some, one of the most spiritual things you can do as a Christian is to grow more comfortable with your embodiment rather than to feel shame about it.” -Kelly Kapic, 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘰 𝘐𝘵 𝘈𝘭𝘭

“Humans need to actually read what AI produces. For students, this means teachers must re-emphasize deep reading as a skill—not merely skimming for answers, but evaluating arguments, checking citations, and understanding how sources connect.” open.substack.com/pub/fitzyhis...

No matter how it might be presented—as efficiency, expediency, progress, inevitability, etc.—may we never become acclimated to what is in truth inhumanity.

“One of the ironies of human nature is that when we sin against another person, we tend to blame the other person for our sin, thereby adding contempt and loathing for the other person to the injury we have already inflicted.” -Harry Lee Poe, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘊. 𝘚. 𝘓𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴

“If technologists and business professionals are AI’s disciples, humanities scholars must be its conscience.” www.chronicle.com/article/are-...

“Change is happening, yes, but let’s approach it in a critical way that leads to outcomes that help us fight to preserve what we value about human-centric teaching.” open.substack.com/pub/marcwatk...

“In interview after interview, I’m hearing that firms are making rapid progress toward automating entry-level work, and that A.I. companies are racing to build ‘virtual workers’ that can replace junior employees at a fraction of the cost.” www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/t...

Finished the first volume (𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊. 𝘚. 𝘓𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴: 𝘈 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘨 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘓𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴 (1898-1918)). On to the second.

“The important thing to note about his conversion is that it began with the irreconcilable cognitive dissonance that grew between the philosophy of materialism he had accepted from Kirkpatrick and his own experience from reading stories.” -Harry Lee Poe, 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊. 𝘚. 𝘓𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘴

In an age of AI and ever increasing data, an ancient question is all the more critical: "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?" (Job 28:12)

“The unholy is the absurd affair in which the creature seeks to be a creature in a way other than that which is purposed by God.” -John Webster

There’s a world of difference between Zechariah’s unbelieving “How shall I know this?” (Luke 1:18) and Mary’s believing yet bewildered “How will this be?” (Luke 1:34).

A digital sycophant is no better than one of flesh and blood.

“To learn in person is not merely to absorb facts. It is to see thinking modeled live, to watch the subtle dance of doubt and clarity across a lecturer’s brow, to feel, in one’s gut, the force of an idea as it first emerges into the air of the room.” open.substack.com/pub/romaterm...

"This is what distinguishes authentic reading from content consumption. The former demands presence. The latter rewards speed. In a culture increasingly structured around frictionless information & engineered virality, this kind of attention [is] countercultural." open.substack.com/pub/carlhend...

I had the joy of having Randy Newman as a friend from whom I learned a lot and with whom I laughed a lot. He went to be with the Lord a year ago this month. This is a conversation I had with him about one of my favorite books, of which he’s the author. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/d...

This, from Kelly Kapic’s 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘰 𝘐𝘵 𝘈𝘭𝘭, is so good:

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.” (Colossians 4:2 ESV)

“Wherever we go, we should expect to find the same thing: human beings somehow running toward and away from God at the same time.” -James Eglinton www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/myth...

My two major reactions to this interview: 1. Thank God for @bonniekristian.bsky.social asking the questions we 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 be asking. 2. This is further evidence that Christians are in desperate need of understanding media ecology. www.christianitytoday.com/2025/05/gloo...

“The challenge for residential schools in the age of AI will be to show that their slower, more expensive model is not a relic of the past but a deep investment in the future of the church.” -Cameron Shaffer mereorthodoxy.com/ai-seminaries

“[O]ur sin is a problem, but being a creature and having limits is not. We need to appreciate the reality of being human as 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥!” -Kelly Kapic, 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘞𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘰 𝘐𝘵 𝘈𝘭𝘭

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16 ESV) Taking in the Word is for more than just 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘸𝘯 spiritual health.

“Somewhere between Silicon Valley’s discovery of ‘edtech’ as a market vertical and ChatGPT’s sudden deification in faculty lounges, a certain class of futurist hucksters smelled blood in the pedagogical water.” -Michael S. Rose open.substack.com/pub/romaterm...

“AI’s speed, ease of use, flexibility, and, most important, wide adoption throughout society are making it feel normal and even necessary to automate reading and writing and bypass the work of learning.” -Nicholas Carr open.substack.com/pub/newcarto...

“If I’m going to be honest, it’s astonishing to me how naively we can tend to think about AI these days. For one, people don’t often consider the meaningful differences between ‘information’ and ‘truth’ and ‘wisdom.’” -Jen Pollock Michel open.substack.com/pub/jenpollo...

“…the actual evangelistic pull isn’t toward the Christian gospel per se, nor is it really even toward religion in general. Readers are invited to consider both, but that’s not where Douthat’s real power is. Rather, 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 is a tract against chronological snobbery.” open.substack.com/pub/samueldj...

Vacuumed the car and I could almost swear I heard it thanking me.

Seeing Jason Alexander doing mayonnaise commercials makes me sad.

No human creation will ever be more fearfully and wonderfully made than its creator.

“[AI] is, indeed, a Frankensteinian situation. I don’t believe that most people involved with the development of this technology have asked themselves enough questions about whether they 𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 to be doing this in the first place. They simply 𝘢𝘳𝘦 doing it.” open.substack.com/pub/stgb/p/i...
