|| NEW PROFILE || Vincent Ibonye charts Nigeria–China ties from Cold War solidarity to today’s strategic partnership, showing how Nigeria has navigated Chinese investment, military cooperation, and ‘debt trap’ allegations—while balancing relations with both China and the US.

One important thing, imho, is that the fear narratives serve to connect the worries of the ruling class (from climate change to inter-imperialist rivalries) with the worries of the rest of us. This way, the interpretation of the worries can be taken over by the cottage industry, and make them..

I once had a fight with my publisher's lawyer over what constitutes "fair use." He said reprinting 4 lines of a poem without the poet's explicit permission was too much. But AI gobbling up whole books now counts as "fair use." Something is definitely wrong with US copyright law.

Wonderful news @yangyangcheng.bsky.social and looking forward to the pod!

Rather beautifully, Professor Mahmood Mamdani's dedication in "Neither Settler Nor Native" is to his trail-blazing son, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social. He quotes the revolutionary Chinese writer Lu Xun's famous concluding lines in "Hometown": 「其實地上本沒有路,走的人多了,也便成了路。」 -魯迅,故鄉 #everynightapoem

In the first episode of 开门见山|Gateway to Global China, @yangyangcheng.bsky.social speaks with @jingwang.bsky.social and Christian Sorace about the legacies of Covid-19 five years after the virus upended our lives. What has changed, what hasn’t, and what does it all mean for China and the world today?

仁 (ren), the Confucian precept often translated as benevolence or humaneness, exemplified by the human adult instinct to protect children. The Analects also states that if the ruler lacks ren, it will be difficult for his subjects to behave humanely. More of ren, now. [「仁」歐陽詢 九成宮醴泉銘]

As a brutal heat wave overtakes much of the country, almost every single state lacks universal air conditioning in their prisons, where temperatures can exceed 120 degrees. This isn’t an issue of comfort or luxury — it's an issue of life or death for many incarcerated people.

Should Huawei be feared? How did it rise when others failed? What distinguishes capitalism in China from those in the West? It's a hard time for nonprofit news outlets, as philanthropy hesitates in response to the turbulent nature of the Trump administration. The Xylom is a vital part of our news ecosystem and a strong partner to ACPC. Will you support strong journalism with a donation to The Xylom?

Time for some real talk: @thexylom.com, the only Asian American-run news outlet covering science, climate, and the environment, will run out of funding in July if we don't secure $7,500 by the end of the month. I might lose my job at a time while waiting for a visa extension -- a nightmare scenario.

Happy birthday to the prophetess Octavia Butler. We live in the times she foretold. From her notebooks.

In September 1964, the US seriously considered attacking the nuclear program of the People's Republic of China, as they could see that a nuclear test was being planned. They abstained from doing so. Why? A few reasons. 🧵

What a time to announce a new project, but a few of us at @madeinchinajournal.com have been working on something very exciting👀 Stay tuned for 开门见山 | Gateway to Global China, a monthly interview series hosted by yours truly🎙️ The first episode drops in a few days, wherever you get your podcasts🎧

Indulging myself in McPhee's 'Draft No. 4', thanks to @yangyangcheng.bsky.social's recommendation during her podcast 😊!

Yangyang Cheng’s excellent review of the much-discussed “House of Huawei” by Eva Dou is packed with sharp insights—and to my surprise and delight, cites the far less-discussed “Making Mao’s Steelworks” by yours truly🙂 昨年出版され話題沸騰の華為についての本の非常に興味深い書評。何故かワタクシの地味な本も引用されてます🙂

After every war someone has to tidy up. Things won’t pick themselves up, after all. Someone has to shove the rubble to the roadsides so the carts loaded with corpses can get by. -Wisława Szymborska, “The End and the Beginning” (t. Cavanagh & Barańczak) #everynightapoem #war

I've lived in Los Angeles for seven years. The only times I've ever heard it this eerily, horribly quiet are in the very first days of Covid. Here's a bit of what it's like right now, in a city where so many people are rightfully afraid to go outside: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

one other side of this is something that I try to emphasize to my students: "what does freedom actually mean" is not a 21stC issue anachronistically read backwards into the 18thC. The US, French, and Haitian Revolutions happened at more or less the same time, with an overlapping cast of characters

"The choice should never have been between Huawei and Cisco or China and the U.S. The false dichotomy of techno-nationalism obscures a shared experience of extraction and exploitation." Powerful conclusion to a rich piece.

||NEW CFPs|| The Made in China Journal invites submissions for an issue on how political depression is navigated and negotiated in China. We’re especially interested in lessons for activists confronting democratic backsliding, authoritarian populism, or political disengagement around the world. 1/2

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.

It's been such a privilege to serve on the jury for the inaugural Baifang Schell Book Prize @asiasociety.org @chinabksreview.bsky.social, and to engage in a conversation with Lin King, who won the Award for Translated Literature with author Yang Shuangzi for Taiwan Travelogue, at the prize ceremony.
