Which group is larger? A) People who encountered, in the wild, a left-leaning person or document encouraging them to use "latinx." B) People who heard, via media, that the left is encouraging everyone to use "latinx." Leave your answer below.

will be v interesting to see if the NYT devotes the attention to this it gave to the president of Harvard's citations!

Coming up next week is the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, on which we celebrate receiving the Torah. At BookishlyJewish we enjoy learning and reading Torah perspectives from all denominations of Judaism, and we hope this bookstack demonstrates some of the diversity that's out there.

There is no way the US survives as a free country unless Trump is removed and imprisoned. Along with many in his administration. It’s just that simple, and it’s time to start repeating this over and over again until a majority of the country is repeating it too.

If you do a close read not only of the Bible but the archeology, it starts to look like the Israelites, & all but a couple of Judean kings, worshipped a goddess for pretty much the whole First Temple era. The implications of this are... far ranging-- & her name might not be what we've believed.

Harvey Milk would've been 95 today. If.

You can tell it's a Republican bill because if it was a Democratic bill the headline would highlight the $3.8 capital-T Trillion it is adding to the federal deficit in the most breathless terms imaginable, and the entire article would be devoted to wondering how it would ever be paid for.

Do I have any followers who know about the history of animal husbandry in the late antique mediterranean? I'm curious as to whether oxen in the Talmud would have been castrated. (Yes, I know practicing castration would be technically prohibited, but you can still purchase a castrated ox).

NPR published a story 5 days ago about three high ranking Trump officials with clear ties to Hitler-admiring antisemites and it barely made a ripple. These are the kind of stories that used to end political careers. Now the subjects of the stories just hold up a middle finger and keep plowing ahead.

Trump's new "Religious Liberty Commission" includes an advisor who has argued that non-Orthodox Jews shouldn't be allowed to make religious liberty claims, period. If you're Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist -- any type of Jew other than the officially favored sect -- you're at risk.

If I’m a Dem elected and I’m asked about Joe Biden’s health, I’m immediately asking the reporter “who is the president of the United States right now?” Bc that’s the first question they ask to test your mental acuity and many reporters seem to be failing it.

if you're letting your freak flag fly, time to lower it to half mast. CDC shut the office which tracks outbreaks/clusters of STIs

Trump/Musk and the entire GOP has spent the last four months systematically liquidating disease cure research in the United States. Lots of critical cure studies shuttered mid-way through. Research shutdown everywhere. It's all hands on deck to prevent new treatments for cancer, ahlzeimers etc.

Today, in the fractious nation violently carved out of land once claimed by several European colonial powers, Mexico, and thousands of indigenous nations, the former coup leader who was recently elected President threatened to drag his predecessor before a military tribunal.

This is a must-read: The Trump administration's use of anti-semitism to attack immigrants and higher education mirrors plans by a group of Christian nationalists in the Heritage Foundation (which produced Project 2025). 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/18/u...

How is the NYTimes opinion editor like its executive editor? "Also like Kahn, who is an heir to the Staples fortune, Kingsbury comes from big-box-company money: Her father was the CEO of Kohl’s and before that Burlington Coat Factory."

It's roughly the first yahrtzeit of the legendary red line, for those keeping track

My least favorite internet debate: "So-and-so is a bad Christian; real Christians believe and do XYZ good things" vs. "stop bowdlerizing Christianity's reputation by pretending being bad is incompatible with Christianity; many real Christians have long believed and done ABC bad things".

Dear Democratic billionaires: for well under $1 million I will form a team and create an actually useful metric, with a much better chart, that reflects media ownership and editorial bias, to break the hold that the Allsides Republicans have on “media bias” debate.

as with trans healthcare and abortion, republicans want health care to be distributed on the basis of ideology rather than on what's in the best interest of the patient. (when they don't want to strip people of healthcare entirely.)

Every institution and human that turns critical functions over to AI will be turning de facto control over those functions (and those institutions and humans) to reactionary billionaire CEOs who have no compunction about tweaking their algorithms to serve their interests.

If Trump gets his way on birthright citizenship, will it be retroactive?

An unorthodox way for this Ohio man to announce his GOP primary challenge to Jim Jordan, but it just might work.

my father was a refugee who was born in a displaced persons camp to two holocaust survivors, which is why i'm so deeply committed to the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. i take it as a grave insult that these soft wet boer bitches would even dare claim the title.

Sing it from the rooftops: congestion pricing in NYC is an unambiguous triumph. It is succeeding beyond its backers wildest aspirations & none of the second-order effects people worried about have come to pass. It's a pure win. Celebrate it! Talk about it! For once, let's own the f'ing narrative.

Reminder that the current MOU that has set American military aid to Israel at 3.8 billion a year was a 10-year deal negotiated by the Obama Administration. It is set to expire in 2026. The Trump guys will be negotiating the next one.
