I’m spending today in Yosemite with my son, which reminded me of when I found this rec field while there a couple years ago. I challenge you to find a baseball diamond with more beautiful natural views. Yosemite Falls from the first base side. Half Dome from the third base side. ⚾️🏞

Unfortunately, I’m unable to attend the annual Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) convention going on now in Texas. However, the McFarland (@mcfarland.bsky.social) booth has copies of “Called Up” available.

GENE TENACE: “He gets off the phone and says to me, ‘You're gonna need that scotch. You’re gonna catch a flight to Oakland and you're catching Catfish Hunter Thursday.’” ⚾️ Tenace’s full story has been posted on Facebook and is one of 109 in my “Called Up” book.

BOB TEWKSBURY: “When I left the mound in my debut at Yankee Stadium, I got a standing ovation. I tipped my cap three ways... They fined me in kangaroo court for overzealous hat tipping.” ⚾️ Tewksbury’s full story is available on my Facebook page and is one of 109 in my “Called Up” book.

A story for Father’s Day… My dad took me to Candlestick Park for the first time in 1987. Appropriately, I took my dad to Candlestick Park for the last time in 2013. ⚾️🏈 FULL STORY ON FACEBOOK (LINK IN COMMENTS)

I attended my first big league game 38 years ago, today. I still have the ticket stub, SGA glove, and a Giants logo bat pen from the experience. What do you remember from your first game?

"NEXT UP" UPDATE: I have interviewed 50 players about their post-playing career transitions. I have edited 30 of those interview transcripts into first-person narratives. Stories are averaging twice the length of the stories in the "Called Up" book (which included 109 stories)… 1/2

It might be too late for me to directly send copies of “Called Up” in time for Father’s Day. However, it’s not too late to get it from Amazon. They currently have a buy one and get one for 50% off sale! a.co/d/6rI4ECB

I've seen numerous posts in my feed about the Junior Giants season starting this weekend. They brought back great memories. When my kids were young, I coached tee-ball four summers with the program.

I posted about Vance Law’s “Called Up” story Monday. He provided me with this photo from his MLB debut for the book. He said it was his first pro game at second base (he was primarily a shortstop at the time). The runner gave him a warm welcome. 😃

Although the circumstances around Adam Greenberg’s MLB debut are tragic, his story is one of my favorites in the “Called Up” book.… (SEE NEXT IMAGE FOR DETAILS.)

VANCE LAW: "(Willie) Stargell was my dad's teammate as well. When I was a little boy, Willie used to play pepper with me out in the right field bullpen at the old Forbes Field. All of a sudden, as a young man, I’m playing right next to a guy I used to look up to as a youth."

Today’s my 10th annual “It’s a Red Adams Jersey, Not a Dodgers Jersey” game at Dodger Stadium. Read the story linked below before you judge me as a bad Giants fan. 😉 sabr.org/journal/arti...

JASON BERGMANN: "We went to bed and Hurricane Katrina was in the gulf as a Category 1. The next morning, we woke up with a Category 5.... It was the most amazing and worst day ever. We lost all our stuff because of the flooding, but I got to realize my dream of going to the big leagues."

SAM MCDOWELL: "My focus was solely on not wanting to be embarrassed... Being 18 years old, I was in a fog." ⚾️ McDowell’s full story has been posted on Facebook and is one of 109 in my “Called Up” book.

This memory popped up from five years ago, today. Did any other insomniacs watch KBO in the middle of the night back then? 🇰🇷⚾️😴

“Next Up” Post-Playing Career Transition Summary: Jim Rushford Jim spent 14 years in professional baseball, including a cup of coffee with the Brewers in 2002. Following his baseball career, Rushford spent 14 years as a heavy equipment operator for a copper mine. He now works in medical billing.

I recently spoke with Bob Tewksbury for the “Next Up” book. Since his playing career, he has worked in mental skills coaching for athletes. We met at Sloan Park, spring training home for the Cubs, in 2020. At the time, he was the Cubs’ Mental Skills Coordinator.

I was born a few years after his career ended. However, I got to see Mays play in a few “old timers games” at Candlestick Park in the 1990s. He was in his early 60s, but each year he hit at least one home run in batting practice.

Guess what?! If you’ve enjoyed any of the “Called Up” stories I’ve posted, I’m sure you’ll love the book. I doubt if you’ll be as excited as I was receiving my first copy but I’m confident you’ll still enjoy it. Send me an email ([email protected]) to purchase it directly!
