Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy. Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media. That’s why Trump is attacking education, science, and the arts – to prevent us from learning. It's Fascism 101. [Cartoon by Adam Zyglis]

Oklahoma is forcing the Supreme Court to choose: Either the justices can allow more religious control of public schools, or they can respect the wishes of the Founding Fathers, writes Adam Laats.

One thing that is interesting/perplexing to me, an author whose books have been banned, is that I'm constantly being asked to talk about how the book bans affect libraries and readers. This is important, but why not ask me, an author, how book bans affect authors? This could be relevant.

Harvard redid its whole homepage to push back against the administration’s demands. I mean, this is just a website but I think it’s kind of a great PR move: www.harvard.edu

The Trump administration's erasure of federal data has put the Internet Archive in the spotlight. The organization, with its small but mighty team, is working to help save the world's digital history.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

Call your reps & senators, tell them to vote NO on SAVE Act-GOP/MAGA bill will make it harder to vote, disenfranchise millions of citizen voters & that’s the goal, it’s the how they will stay in power. @michaelbennet.bsky.social @hickenlooper.bsky.social @joeneguse.bsky.social

This is the way… “This Polish example potentially has wider relevance for democratic politics, showing that when a “cultural backlash” against progressive change is aggressively institutionalised, it may provoke an answering “reverse backlash” accelerating the very change it seeks to block.”

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

“You know, we have - our imagination of a coup or a regime change is that there are tanks and violence…nowadays, that's not how democracies fail. They fail through attacks on institutions coming from within.” @anneapplebaum.bsky.social Poland’s tactics to combat authoritarian swing needed here.

Remember this day. The last full day with a Democratic President. We don’t know when or if we’ll ever live another day like this. 🥺

GOOD.

Is it “lack of change” or lack of support & protection from the constant drumbeat to take on more/do more to justify our worth? Librarians are information professionals, collection development experts, literacy teachers & guardians of intellectual freedom-value & support librarians, that is change.

It's all tied together and don't let them trick you into thinking it's for safety
