Hurricane #Barbara has become the first hurricane of the 2025 Eastern Pacific season 🌀 Barbara is located southwest of Mexico and is moving northwest. It is near peak intensity but is expected to weaken and dissipate in the coming days.

Satellite view shows #wildfire smoke from #Canada crossing the Ligurian Sea, reaching northern Italy. The hazy plume stretches from the Gulf of Lion to Genoa, driven by upper-level winds. This transatlantic transport shows how distant fires affect European skies and atmospheric clarity. #AirQuality

Love being able to 𝘀𝗲𝗲 the connectivity of our planetary system. The Sahara fertilizing the oceans across the Atlantic, feeding plankton and helping to draw down CO₂. Iron, Phosphorous, and other nutrients in the dust even help to fertilize soils in Florida and along the Gulf! 🎥 @zoom.earth 1/2

Four charts showing the extent of cuts to NASA in the FY26 budget: - Cuts to every science division - Smallest science funding since 1984 - 19 active, inflight missions cancelled - Smallest NASA budget since FY 1961

Newly available high-resolution satellite imagery collected by Maxar shows the village of Blatten, Switzerland, almost completely buried after the collapse of the Birch Glacier. Truly catastrophic.

The first tropical depression of 2025 has formed in the eastern Pacific: Tropical Depression One-E. It may become Tropical Storm Alvin soon, but is expected to weaken before approaching Mexico. Latest satellite view and live tracker here: zoom.earth/storms/01e-2...

🌀 The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season approaches 🌀 This video provides a brief overview of current expectations for how active the season will be 🌀 The best thing you can do is be prepared. Know your local vulnerability and have a plan. Everyone stay safe this season! youtu.be/ZoJXfZVleak?...

The National Weather Service seeks to fill 155 "critical" vacancies ahead of Hurricane Season, through internal transfers between offices. The step illustrates how depleted the agency's ranks are at particular posts around the U.S. www.cnn.com/2025/05/14/w...

This animation the #wildfires in #Saskatchewan, Canada show the shocking amount of smoke and other pollutants.💨 Very long and thick smoke plumes moving northeast. Many hotspots also detected.🔴🔥 🛰 @eumetsat.int Processed in @zoom.earth 👨‍🔬 @mparrington.bsky.social

Update: The National Weather Service’s contract to produce common language translations for nws.noaa.gov products has been reinstated. Translation capabilities are expected to be operational on or before the end of the day on Monday, April 28. www.weather.gov noaa.gov

Yesterday, GOES-19 became operational and took over for GOES-16 as GOES-East. As a farewell, here are a few of the most impressive and interesting views that GOES-16 provided over the last 7 years... The moon’s shadow passes over North America during the Great American Eclipse in August 2017.

Clear skies over the British Isles. Wildfire smoke can be seen in Northern Ireland, Wales, and southern Scotland, while Saharan dust drifts high over western Ireland.

Almost all NOAA Research websites that rely on cloud services - including Amazon, Google and WordPress - are poised to disappear at midnight ET Saturday after a contract was targeted for "early termination." Labs may also feel the effects. Story for @bloomberg.com (free link):

The National Weather Service will stop issuing forecasts + storm warnings in Spanish after a translation software contract lapsed at midnight Tuesday. Unclear when/if service will return. Scoop with @weathersullivan.bsky.social (free link): www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

A stunning view of the partial #SolarEclipse from #space! 🌒 Captured by @eumetsat.int's Meteosat-12 satellite, you can see the Moon’s shadow sweeping across Earth between 06:00 - 12:30 UTC. 🛰 Unlike a total eclipse, part of the Sun remained visible - did you catch it from the ground? 👀

The moon’s shadow is moving across the North Atlantic this morning as today’s partial solar eclipse begins 🌙 Check out the live satellite view here: zoom.earth/maps/satelli...

🔴⚠️The third largest wildfires in the history of #SouthKorea: 43300acres burnt,27000 evacuated,18 death and still the fires are growing boosted by dry weather and winds. It's not just sunny for most of England, Scotland and Wales. 😎 It's also sunny across much of Europe – France, Belgium, Netherland, Luxembourg, Germany, Czechia, W Poland and Hungary. 💦 But not Spain and Portugal. Sorry Iberia! Image from the wonderful @zoom.earth #weather #ukweather

A non-tropical low has been tagged by the NHC in the central Atlantic, but development is unlikely as it will move into an area of strong upper-level winds and dry air tonight into Tuesday.

The people who produce this Mauna Loa atmospheric CO₂ record have a lab in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, about 50 miles (80 km) from the observatory. By closing the lab, it'll be really difficult to maintain the CO₂ observations.

A massive dust storm is currently sweeping across the southern Great Plains of the United States 💨

Satellite imagery shows smoke rising above the clouds after an oil tanker collides with a cargo ship in the North Sea, off the coast of East Yorkshire in the United Kingdom.

Severe Tropical Storm #Jude has formed near Madagascar. Jude will likely continue to intensify before making landfall over #Mozambique near Nacala. Live tracker here: zoom.earth/storms/jude-...

A complete and all-out attack on NOAA. Without a functioning NOAA there is no function seafood industry, no functioning radar network, no functioning weather models (US or otherwise). Would you cut a personal investment that saved you 70 times over your original investment every single year? (1/3)

"Losing this much money, this fast, has no precedence in NASA's history. It would force terrible decisions, including turning off scores of active, productive, irreplaceable missions, halting nearly all new mission development, and decimating the country's space science workforce." 🔭

"If this is implemented, it would be nothing short of an extinction-level event for space science and exploration in the United State" arstechnica.com/space/2025/0...

Another one bites the (lunar) dust! This is Intuitive Machines' #IM2 lander that once again toppled over after trying to land on Mons Mutons near the lunar south pole. The picture had lots of detail hidden in the shadows which I brought out in processing.

**This would end space science as we know it.** I’d probably be out of a job. Successful ongoing missions would be turned off. Future missions would be axed. Some research centers (NASA & non-NASA) would likely dissolve.

Tropical Cyclone #Alfred is close to landfall near #Brisbane and has now weakened to Category 1 on the Australian scale. Live tracker: zoom.earth/storms/alfre...
