This does not make me optimistic about 2025 America! How golden ages really start—and end economist.com/culture/2025... from The Economist

And Sinners was also in the last four before these.

Being curious about where someone grew up and asking them what they like about it almost always leads to a great conversation.

Not mentioned in this otherwise excellent article is that the farm is guarded by a cat named Tina Turnip.

Years ago we went to watch Eurovision in the German American Cultural Center in Chicago (DANK Haus). Their projector was broken, missing yellow and messing up anything mixed with yellow. The broadcast became an amazing game of who can 1st guess the country based on their distorted flag and colors.

Apparently before the St. Lawrence Seaway opened when they wanted to get large ships into the Great Lakes they just brought them up the Mississippi and shoved them through the Chicago River

Free idea that could be really powerful right now: during the Nuremberg trials, psychologists interviewed all of the Nazi leaders on trial. Could be a great movie or even miniseries exploring the variety of ways they all became fascist and perpetrators of such grisly crimes.

1. Rumeysa Ozturk, a 30-year-old Turkish doctoral student at Tufts, speaks after a federal judge ordered her release following her arrest by federal agents on the street. She calls the United States “the greatest democracy in the world” and says she has “faith in the American justice system.”

Honestly we need a six season HBO multi-character show about the French Resistance, following both resisters and collaborators, with each season one year from 1940 to 1945.

In Sydney Lumet’s Making Movies he writes the best films are when everyone is working to make the same film, as opposed to trying to be the best actor, writer, etc. That one scene in Sinners — you know the one — is a lot of talent working together to make something truly transcendent.

This is why you need to hire some Medill grads alongside the Ivy Leaguers.

A podcast on the dirty secrets of Microsoft Encarta would do heavy numbers in the nerd world !!!

that one scene in SINNERS is one of the most breathtaking feats of cinema i've seen in years. coogler is cooking.

Bluesky is a retirement home for 39 year old millennials who are forcibly turning themselves into history dads (nongendered) so if you have a hot take about one of the more popular history dad wars you had better come strapped

Always love a good Economist obituary. Always a good time to remember those that helped defeat Nazis. Betty Webb never spoke about her work, until she had to economist.com/obituary/202... from The Economist

I truly don’t understand Twitter ads anymore.

I knew after watching Sinners I would learn a ton from Wesley Morris if he wrote anything about it. I was thrilled to find this podcast. Highly recommended—but make sure you’ve seen Sinners first. I’m even more impressed with all the ideas Coogler packed in. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/p...

If you’re into big boats, the brand new Polsteam Okra just completed its maiden voyage, going from China to Milwaukee (via Cleveland) and is in Milwaukee’s inner harbor

Aside from one boneheaded moment no one makes horror movie mistakes either. Once they realize they’re dealing with vampires they immediately follow anti-vampire best practices to best of their ability.

Giving a zoom lecture on the architecture of Chicago's South Side for the Wilmette Public library Monday evening. Sign up and check me out. Because in addition: "Bey will offer an exclusive sneak peek into his upcoming book project focusing on the West Side of Chicago."

Omg, Sinners, y’all! I have chills. Hits me on so many registers. If you haven’t seen it, go, immediately. Ryan Coogler is, and I don’t use this word lightly, a genius.

First known American citizen to be deported.

Forced disappearances are the trademark human rights violation of the world's most infamous dictators. Our Constitution and Bill of Rights were designed to stop arbitrary and discriminatory abuse of power and cruel and unusual punishments.
