That was incredible and exceeded even the high expectations I had. Cried tears of joy and also sadness; why are so many of my heroes dead? But damn that was 3 hours of excellence from Quest and I could have watched 3 hours more.
Also getting choked up every time Hal Willner is on the screen in this doc. Back when my brother was in the SNL cast, I always got into conversations with Hal whenever I visited 30 Rock, and he always had something musically interesting to tell me.
I loved watching Hal’s commentary as much as I enjoyed the performance clips. I first discovered Hal, when, “That’s The Way I Feel Now” was released. When he did, “Stay Awake”, I became a devotee!
Man, I was AT this SNL in 1993, sitting on the swivel chairs on 8H, 5 feet away from the big black grand piano as Paul McCartney played “Hey Jude.”
I was also directly facing “home base” when Paul did the Chris Farley Show that night.
Whatta night.
Damn that’s beautiful Paul! I love the way everyone gathers around Macca during the closing credits from that show. It looks like Mike and Chris are doing the great “We are not worthy” genuflecting…
What an experience!
Just read your story on your Substack and now *I* am crying. What a beautiful memory. I haven't ever been in a position to meet a Beatle (despite many attempts back in the day hanging out outside the Dakota) so can't even imagine the level of emotions you must've felt. The SNL special was brilliant.
My only complaint is other than a flash of George Harrison in a photo montage, he seemed to be non-existent. Unless I missed him in the first 5 minutes because I tuned in late. The history of SNL music probably could (and should) be an ongoing series. There's so much there to mine.

Look forward to viewing it tomorrow
