It boggles my mind that people don’t see The Trial by F Kafka as a religious allegory. It’s not about bureaucracy, and there’s not so many ‘unanswered questions’. I had the exact same thought while reading it to the point where a lot was just soooo unenjoyable because it reminded me of religious rhetoric I've heard growing up and still do😭😭😭 much prefer that interpretation to the bureaucracy one

At first I was thinking that maybe the book’s projecting Kafka’s fear of afterlife, but in the end it reads more like criticism of Abrahamic religions. I really love when one can tell something about a writer after reading their work, shows that the writer left a piece of their soul in it.

I’m really delighted you felt this religious rhetoric, too!! I was starting to think that maybe I read a different version of the book from some parallel universe. The discussions online that I’ve read fail to see the connection.

Ohhh this is so interesting. I have that book in my library since July, but I still haven’t read it. I have been really intrigued by it, but people that recommend it to me only talked about law/ bureaucracy, they have never mentioned any religious allegory :o now I’m even more curious to read it

People who think it’s about bureaucracy are missing the bigger picture. It’s the same as thinking Metamorphosis is about an actual cockroach.

If anything, there’s such a thing as a foreword. No shame in having to read the context behind the text. Much more shame in living in a bubble and refusing to have your own thoughts.
