The section starts with a REALLY messy beginning - sometimes the MC has to start the section even though not everyone is back in their seats and you have to just perform into chaos until it all settles.

You can't really get into material in this situation. One common stupid opinion is "if you're funny enough people will pay attention". Just no. Because in order to hear something funny you have to hear it: all of it. And so the more you let chat grow, the fewer and fewer people can access the funny.

I'd already been talking through the worst of the start with this big group having a family reunion from all over the world. They're chatty, jabbery - they've all arrived back at their seats at different times. It's messy!

BTW - this is the most I've ever stood in a glass house throwing stones because I literally did my degree in stand-up comedy so I SHOULD NOT be joking about someone studying business to open a coffee shop!
