I recently did most of the navigating for my 85 year old uncle through what was already a "challenging" Social Security process to collect survivor benefits. I'm reading reports that up to 50% of the staff and that's just unacceptable.

My mom contacted them after her husband died. The person that answered the phone asked her if she was married to my dad who passed 2 years prior. Although my dad remarried and had 3 more kids my mom got his survivor benefits ππΌππΌ
Totally unacceptable! 1st & foremost it's many Seniors ONLY INCOME! How is this right 2 take away their only way 2 survive? This insanity must stop! Those so called GOP in Congress better fix this. I forsee Seniors dropping into depression & giving up. These billionaires don't give a shit abt us!
I took care of my 90 year old grandmother and even before Covid, dealing with SS was a pain. Post-Covid, youβd have to book appointments weeks ahead or spend hours on the phone waiting to talk to someone.
I can only imagine how much worse itβll be after itβs gutted.
There are horribly long waits to get a call back - hours and hours long. They were already very short on staff for the needs of the population. Now people probably won't even be able to get the help they need. I don't see how it could be any other way.
When I applied online for SS and Medicare a few years ago, there was a problem.
Thankfully, a quick visit to a SS Office and a knowledgeable human quickly cleared up everything. Without that person Iβd probably still be waiting.
I had a very hard time to get the social security disability. I didnβt want to quit my job but my back pain got extremely worse and had to undergo multiple surgeries. Unfortunately the surgery was failed and I had to apply social security disability and Medicare. But itβs not easy.
My claim was denied and I had to appeal. Luckily a friend introduced me to an attorney who wouldn't charge me unless I received Social Security Disability benefits. I've been without income for over 2 years and I can't file for unemployment insurance because it would void my SSD claim.
Many people die or become homeless while waiting. The amount of SSD isnβt much. The wealthy people canβt imagine the hardships weβre going through. I really wanted to keep my job, especially it was about to promote and get raised. I had 10 back surgeries so I canβt work anymore.
I started drawing a year ago and it went off without a hitch but helping my uncle who just lost his wife of 60 years get survivor benefits was not an easy process. You have to have the patience of a saint and now it'll be much worse.

The ONLY effective recourse for the survival of the US democracy, flawed though it may have been, is armed revolt.
